    Audi S3 (Revo'd) vs Integra Type-R (97)

Having recently found out my S3 is actually remapped with a REVO Stage 1, I thought I'd better put it 'to the test'. Ideally, I want to go against a standard 210 model from 2nd' onwards on a private track (of course..) I still can't believe my car has the 'map.

But anyway, after the gym tonight, a fellow friend agreed to go side by side in 2nd gear (I was well through the rev range, about 5500rpm and he was screaming along touching 8000 (well into Vtec)), as we launched I (as I hoped) shot forward and gained a half a cars length on him. However, this was the same for about 400yrds. I couldn't shift him.

I know these things are quick (and light compared to the S3 AND more aerodynamic) but does sound about right to you from your S3 experience?!

2001 Audi S3 standard apart from Revo (approx 251bhp) and the Teg Type-R, standard.

    Thanks, Jim

May I just add also that I've been told (by Quattronics) there is a slight boost leak somewhere, I can't say how much of a difference this will make when resolved but still, thought I'd let you know.

    That's about right....
Once off the line, the ITR has similar power actually going to the road by virtue of it's lower losses...and it weighs much less.

The S3 should be quicker out of tight, slippy corners...the ITR quicker round a track (assuming the S3 is otherwise standard), but out on the road, not much in it.
Probably the driver makes the difference, based on the confidence the car gives them.
    ITR brakes are better though...

I still maintain, I would have been faster overall point to point on a backroad in my ITR vs my S3 re-mapped.

Sounds about right, I had a play against a DC2 Integra once, rolling in 2nd gear, it was quite close! The Integra was actually slowly passing me when it was in the VTEC zone in 2nd and I had to shift to 3rd, then i reeled him in and slowly passed, but we was well heading into 3 figures now, so I backed off and let him by.

we have a teg and an s3 in the family and i have driven both.i would say that my remapped s3 off the line is marginally quicker but once the teg gets up the rev range it becomes a completely different story.think the best way to sum the two cars up is the teg from the outset was built as a track car for the road and the s3 a beefed up version of the a3 that was still comfortable and refined.achillies heel, the weight.too be neck a neck with your mates teg is no suprise.

...and when you really start pushing on, one gets better and better, more precise and more involving...the other gets more and more out of shape and dull, the harder you push on.

was it a dc2 or dc5??? Also if he was at 8k then he was pretty much hitting the limiter (unless he had a k pro) which is just over 60 and basing it on how my mapped s3 performs 60 is about the limit in 2nd (based on my 8p s3).

Do a few runs and see how your cars compare that will give a better idea, what speed were you starting from?

    I would.
In terms of driving dynamics, I certainly would.
Crap at best when standard, and efficient but dull and uninspiring when fully sorted.
Very well built, easy to live with, very quick, great handling and amazing on the brakes...just...dull. No excitement, thrills or edginess to it. Almost too easy.

I loved my S3...it's probably the best all round package I've ever owned...but compared to other cars I've owned and driven...it was just dull.

To be fair i have to agree with some of the comments on here..

ive always seen the S3/A3 a luxury hatch back with a fair amount of power, you cant really compare it to a integra type R, just a completely different car, although the power might be the same at standard stage, the way the two cars drive, are completly different, one is more of a luxury/posing car whereas the vtec range of hondas can be set up for driving hard and fast.

Take any vtec engine/car .. you play around with it, set up the suspension, cams, open the air passage ways, the long rev range of a vtec its bloody nippy and quite exciting for a 4 pot N/A engine.
Comparing a correctly set up vtec to the 20vt range id describe them as boring, yeah its quick but where is the excitement, the raw power, numb ass, aching forearms after killing it around a bendy road or track from 5500 rpm to whatever your vtec controller takes you...

I'll always love the audi a3/s3 but there will be a limit to how much id spend on trying to make it go quicker or handle well, id rather start with something like a vtec engine tune it to the nuts, and take it on the track, and spend money on the audi making it look good and have a comfortable progressive drive.

    Audi - comfortable power
    Honda - aggressive animal

How dare you call a Honda an Animal!!

Interesting thread..... and good to know..... although i am seriously swayed towards the newer Integra...they look soooo nice (i know not as good).... just a trade of between comfort and fun!! i think the Integra would make a great weekend car for my situation, obviously this would be different for all of us

    Good test though

Some interesting points here chaps, I'll look into them with more detail later this evening.

Scott, it was, yes. I was talking about you actually.. I noticed on your PH advert you had the 'map etc done at Quattronics. Sounds as though you had a fair bit done!

Jimmeh, I have a Revo SPS3 device if you want to know for sure if it's mapped, try putting it back to the standard file with the device and take it for a spin. I'm only 10mins drive away from Quattronics.

    S3IZZO, you have PM!

Putting it back to standard though, would we be able to put 'stage 1' back, if indeed it 'was' there?

Which one? There are 3 and all are quite different

If you are thinking of the more common EP3 01-07 then a standard S3 would struggle IMO, my mate has a Leon 1.8 20VT APR mapped to 210ish, exhaust, induction, TIP and he struggled against a standard EP3 up to 80 which is strange as this Leon I have seen give a Boxster S a run for its money up to 80 and a poverty spec Evo 8

Are you the guy that bought the car not knowing it had a big turbo conversion already on it?

Actually yes, that rings a bell. He did say you brought the car off him.. (with the work already carried out). Can I ask, why are you selling?

I'm having the S back to Corey to clear the engine for me, some two/three hours work but hopefully should make it run a bit nicer.

s3izzo, i wish it did have a big turbo, but no... just a stage 1 map lol.

Im not desperate to sell, just fancy a change. If i cant sell it ill just keep it!!! Whats up with the engine any way?? cant see it taking that long if its just a scan and fault code erase??

So whats the views on the s3 so far Jimmeh??

I agree with you here,i use the audi and the golf as daily drivers.. and have the CRX with a turbo'd integra lump for fun (its nuts). No point trying to make the audi as quick as the CRX as it simply wont happen, and ther is no point!

One of my mates bought a Fiat Coupe 20v turbo for a grand the other week and i was most put out to find it pulls away from my S4 in 3rd and 4th gear on a rolling start.

I must add it was his idea, i'm not a boy racer!

    He was well chuffed though.....

I love the look of the new Integra, and I've actually been looking quite alot for one around suffolk area in a garage so i could go and have a spin, don't plan on selling the S3 but you never know, I'm always on the lookout!! Has anyone on here drove one?? I know the are 220bhp, but how easy is it to tune a V-tec?? i think if i had one i would want to get it near 280bhp....

But on a different note I'm currently drolling over this -

    http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/555456.htm

If it wasn't for running costs, but then again i only do 150-200 miles a week....

Doubt you would get one near 280BHP without FI

They respond well to, GruppeM or Mugen induction kits and Spoon, Toda, Mugen and Fujistubo exhausts

Then Kpro is a apparently a good ECU solution.

Google TDI North, he specialises in the EP3 Civic Type-R and as they are very similar engines it would be worth speaking to him if you got one

i just feel sometimes the ep3 type r is underestimated...tbh there not alot of difference between a mapped and standard s3...a type r in the dry is awesome off the line, my mate has 1 and he has come across plenty of s3's which he has jus waved goodbye to...i was driving it myself not too long ago when i came across a s3 standard it was but it seemed like it didnt stand much of chance against that VTEC OOO YEAH YOU GOTA luv it...is one does have an induction kit on it which gives it a lovely sound but yeah coming back to the point EP3 TYPE IS A LOVELY CAR I LOVE THEM

I had a 2000 ITR before my S3 and it was very good, probably not as quick as a remapped S3 70+ but point to point it's probably quicker, but a much more enjoyable drive overall. I miss mine
