Hi folks,

I recently bought my old audi S3 (by chance) on ebay which had been sold to a finance house (it was like seeing an old friend so I had to buy her again!) and it looks mint apart from some very minor things. I need to wait for the V5 till I can tax it and once this is done it'll be going to a specialist for a full service etc.

However, I have noticed that under the bonnet, on the left side, there looks like a pipe may be missing and I am wondering what it is (radiator perhaps?).

The first picture shows nothing but it shows the area I am looking at a bit more clearly:

The bit I have noticed is the pipe with a copper looking connector, near the middle. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

is it plastic or actually metal pipe?

Pretty sure its a metal pipe and not plastic. Hoping someone who has an S3 can check and see if they have something connecting where it looks mine doesn't. Cheers.

just been and had a loook at mine, its looks like you have a sensor missing. cannot see where it goes as it ******* down out side so cannot look under car.

Thanks for looking. At least I know something is missing as suspected. Nothing flags up on the DIS when I start the car so will be interesting to find out what it is...

if the rain dies off i'll pull my car in the garage and have a look under for you and trace where it goes.

I thought might have been a secondary air pump pipe with a copper inner head to strengthen the connection to the pump, but maybe is a sensor, what year is it as the facelift removed the pump I believe so would dash that theory.

Its a 2000 facelift AMK model. Cheers, Leon.

i think its a switch for the power steering , see if there a wire connector lying around there

Ah thats touchy dates as it kinda went pre-facelift, middle facelift then actual facelift so might still have had the pump, tell me on the airbox is there another small pipe attached to the left hand side about 1.5 inch diameter that goes down across front of bottom of engine to that area where loose pipe is?

Yes its pre-facelift on the 210 engine. I had a look from the airbox and don't think that pipe exists you mention. Having checked this morning there is very light oil in this pipe, not engine oil as that's much darker (needs a service). So it could be the steering pump oil perhaps...

I have an AMK engine and this is what you should be seeing on the end of that pipe; looks like a sensor of some kind:

I can't see either where the pipe or the other end of the sensor cable goes unfortunately so it's not very easy to identify. My pipe looks rather clean though compared to the rest and the only pipe I've had replaced in that area recently in the high pressure power steering pipe if that helps?

Thanks for the picture and feedback. From other comments and yours, it's most likely to be related to the power steering. Perhaps my sensor has been disconnected to stop an error code flagging up? Hopefully will be getting the car into awesome gti next week so i'll get this looked at and fixed. Cheers again.

what that sensor does is keeps the revs up slightly when steering is turned , is your revs bouncing when you turn you steering?

Not able to give the car a run as it has no tax at the moment (waiting for V5) but will check this when I take it out next time - thanks.

leon tax the car online! as long as its insured and an MOT its should be fine!

I'm putting on a private plate so its easier waiting for the V5 and going to my local dvla office and doing the transfer/tax all on the same day. With any luck I'll be on the road middle of next week. Cheers anyway.
