    Wanted - Modded S3

    Hi guys

Had my Golf R32 for a while now and although its great im wanting to increase the power and with the V6 lump its not easy (or cheap) so im thinking of looking for an S3 with some good modifications to take it up to around 260-280bhp.

Im not talking major mods but maybe remap, sports cat, exhaust system and intake. Suspension mods i dont mind but would rather this be limited as dont want to compromise the ride comfort too much.

Also would want car with FSH (specialist preferably but FASH will do) less than 75k miles and ideally a facelift version. Also if over 50k evidence of cambelt change and water pump change too. Budget is 13k.

Ill be checking out the for sale section, did have a quick look through and couldnt spot any that match my specs.

One question though for those with above mods, how does the std clutch cope with the extra power and which remap is regarded as the best for those mods?

    thanks

think the clutches take more hammer in the S3 than the R32 due to the power delivery. Ive driven both and they both have their pros and cons.

R32 does feel sportier tbh and arn`t they 250 ish std after vw sorted the map out finally a few years back ???

Ive been in an S3 but not driven one yet, R32 does feel sportier but was hoping some slight mods would change the S3.

Around 247 i think with the 6463 ecu update. R32 is great but im looking at around (2nd hand) 300 for exhaust, 150 for intake, 300 for remap to get it up to around 265-270bhp max. Im trying to weigh up whether i spend all that money for little gain or jump ship and spend that money on an S3

Anyone owned both or done something similar to what im contemplating?

    My previous car was a 2001 S3 and I currently own a MKIV R32.

In my personal opinion, the R32 is far superior to the S3, it's a more complete package, it handles better, looks better, is faster in standard form and commands more respect than the S3 which in standard form is very run of the mill. The 1.8T engine is coarse and unrefined, it's also quite thirsty and not all that fast. There's no doubt it's a better alternative if you're into modding cheaply, but the S3 handles like a tank. You'll have to spend serious money sorting the suspension out. The R32's driving dynamics are better - not perfect by any stretch of the imagination - and of course there is the low down grunt and smooth delivery of the brilliant V6. You can get the power to around 300bhp with a Milltek exhaust, Panel filter, Schrick Cams and a remap. It's not going to be cheap, but in my eyes the R32 is far superior to the 8L S3 which is horribly dull.

If you're really feeling adventurous you can opt for a turbo conversion, you'll be destroying most cars at the traffic lights should you feel that way inclined!

My best mate has a mk 4 r32. Much better than the s3!
He has a miltek non resonated ( Which makes it sound like a lambo lol!) carbarnio intake and a custom code remap. IT revs away so much nice than any 1.8t ever could.

In my opinion its not all about figures, his probably runs about 260 ish bhp, but the rev limit has been raised. Its just so much more fun to drive than my CC mapped s3.

Now imagine that NA power charged up.....................
r32 bilstien shocks, H+R springs, custom code map........ and buel xb9 for proper petrol fun!

S3s are direly slow as standard, and harldy any better when upto 265 mate

Mind you, I always found the R32 heavy and boring when I used to drive them at work. Looked at both but settled for an S3. Thing to remember is that your comparing two totally differnt engines, a 1.8turbo 4 Cylinder againt a 3.2 NA 6 Cylinder.

As for clutches, I run a Sachs paddle clutch in mine to cope with all the extra power, dunno if thats needed on the 265ish ones or not tho
