1998 A3 1.6 sport MPG?

Hi, I was just wondering if you know from personal experience what the MPG is of a 1998 A3 sport 1.6 petrol? A friend wants to sell it to me and I currently have a 1995 Volvo 2.5 960 which is extremely petrol inefficient and am looking for a nice upgrade. Various websites hint to around 40MPG but I was wondering if this might be correct. Thanks!

I can get around 40mpg on my 1.8t so I'm sure 40mpg must be about right for a 1.6. Sure someone with first hand experience will be able to definitely let you know though.

My 1.6 gets around 38 mpg! 120 miles to £20 fuel if that helps!!

The 1.6 are prity crap with mpg to be truthful got about 350 to 400miles with my last fill up on a 1.6 with 73,000

On a good long run, 40mpg is easy in the s3, around town it's a struggle to get above 25!

What's the diesel a3s like? Mpg wise my Mondeo gets good mpg above 50
