Hi everyone, hopeing someone can chek my logs.

not sure where to start. I bought my s3 amk about 4 years ago. it came with loads of receipts and one of them was a jabbasport custom remap. I recently bit the bullet and bought vcds, awsome tool and its already paid for itself.

I've been logging blocks trying to figure out what sort of power my car has and if it has been mapped or not.

Car setup - pretty standard, has forge 007p dv, and a silicone tip, n249 delete.

Logging block 002 the top g/s i was getting was 180g/s, average was 170g/s thats flat out to 7000 in 3rd gear.

i did have boost leaks but i think ive sorted them all now since doing the n249 delete. before doing the runs i had no faults (well i had the odd few but nothing that would effect engine performance) after doing a few runs to 7000 i had 2 faults - misfire cylinder 1 and 4 - not sure if this could be related.

p.s. car is running on BP fuel. apprently it was mapped using vpower but nowhere around me sells it so i get standard BP fuel.

Not the easiest to read... best bet is to screen shot the run in excel and post up the image...

Anyhoo... 170gs is not even std power really... most average around 180gs with remaps typically aroujnd 200gs...

How are you doing the runs? best way for the road is third gear from 2k rpm then foot to the floor until as close to redline as is safe/legal to do...

The logs aren't complete enough to make a best judgement but actual boost is not meeting request in places but tbh the runs aren't consistent enough to really make any sense of...

Bad points just from looking at that... low airflow, bad timing pull (8's at one point) and not meeting requested boost...

Log blocks 002, 031 and 115 initially then do a run of 002, 020, 115

Make sure the engine is at 90 deg when doing the runs...

<tuffty/>

thanks tuffty - awsome quick reply.

the first run was in 3rd started at about 3k all the way to red line. the 2nd run was pretty much from 2k all the way to red line in 3rd.

will do another run tomorrow night, i also did a run with the maf unplugged and didnt notice and difference. getting a bit worried now to what the problems might be

Check for presence of oil in the throttle body... if it drips out then that probably why you are getting timing pull and low power... the turbo could be shot

<tuffty/>

if you dont notice a difference with it unplugged, that tells you its nakered.
the car should feel alot worse with it unplugged.

they are notoriously unreliable, if it hasnt ever been changed, do it.

with the timimg pull you're getting you might want to start looking for a garage that does high octane. tesco momemtum is ideal.

thanks, do you think the pull might be because it was remapped using vpower so it needs the extra octane? if so im scewed - nearest tesco is over an hour drive and the only place that used to do vpower is now a texaco garage and they dont have any higher octane fuel :(

it could be part of the reason, not all of it. if it was mapped for high octane, and your using standard, that explains some of the pull.

check leaks
check for escessive oil in boost system
change maf
and go from there. if its healthy as should be then maybe you could consider an updated map to suit your circumstances.

ok will remove the TB on the weekend to check, i did take the IAT sensor out the other night to clean it. didnt seem to have much oil on it. i really hope its not the turbo :(

where should i check for oil in the boost system? if i remove the intercooler hoses and check them and the tip? anywhere else?

Not sure it would pull 8's due to octane on its own... check the throttle body for oil first... if its not full of oil then ideally you need to take some timing out of your map...

hi guys, did a few runs tonight.

car was up to temp and i did the runs after driving for 25 mins.

went from 2k rpm all the way to red line in 3rd foot to the floor. i did 4 runs, 2 meassuring 002 031 115 and 2 runs 002 020 115

havent had a chance to remove TB yet will do on the weekend

Boost doesn't seem to meet request... still got timing pull... fuelling looks ok though which is a good thing at least...

<tuffty/>

Thanks again for looking tuffty and spending time to work out what's wrong. If boost isn't meeting the request could that mean a tired turbo? My car has done 160k miles. Also I mentioned that disconnecting the Maf made no difference could that mean the Maf is shot and giving false readings?

160k and not had a turbo change you know about?

tbh mate it sounds like the turbo could be on its way... the timing pull suggests there is oil getting into the intake and diluting the fuels octane rating... that could be due to the engine breathing a bit heavy (rings) and/or the turbo seals or tbh any other seal at that mileage...

I need to look at an another S3 plot to see whats what tbh... I am sure Bill will be along sometime tomorrow and give you a better idea but does look like your turbo is a little tired..

<tuffty/>

Ok thanks, would fitting a catch can be any help? I have been tempted to do it of or a while just need to gather the parts.

I don't think it's had a new turbo, it had a new head and a rebuild at 100k with a lot of seals replaced then, not sure if the turbo one was done.

logs look like a tired turbo to me
fueling is a tad rich in the 0.7x region, but it looks slow to spool and does not meet requested boost hardly

a test I would do if such a car came here, and was on the dyno, would be disconnect the pipe going to the actuator and gently do a power run to see what the turbos capable of "unleashed"........... often, its no different to what you have posted.. ie Flat out/tired, often accompanied by charge pipes which are dripping with oil (go hand in glove with high CF's as its running on its own oil, which derates the effective fuel octane big time!)

thanks Bill, do you think just swapping out the turbos would solve the issue or are there more part that i would need to change? and i've heard its a head off job on these :(

or as a temporary solution do you think a catch can would help until i can get the funds together for a new turbo and fitting it.

as its a nice day today i decided to take some of the pipes off in the car park at work - not looking good

this is the charge pipe side
2012-05-02123752.jpg

and this ones the TB side
2012-05-02123559.jpg

Oil in the first charge pipe is fairly typical (not loads but a little) but there shouldn't be any at the TB...

<tuffty/>

my suggestion would be, clean off those pipes... and disconnect PCv from intake so you can eliminate "heavy breathing" from turbo, in terms of oil source.. If after doing this and some running the pipes are again oiled as pictured, then it looks bad for the turbo..

its lazy spool, and oil, to me points as this being the most likely scenario... doing the test will eliminate breather from the issue however (catch tank is always a good idea imho anyhows)

Thanks Bill, think i've already removed the PCV, i pretty much got rid off it all ready to fit the catch can, all i have left is the 2 breather feeds going into the hockpuck and then into the tip.

removed it all because i was having major boost leaks from the split hoses.
