Heatshield FAIL - Look inside, DONT DO THIS

    Okies...

A car here which has some owner enthusiast diy work done to it, in prep for a bigger turbo being fitted/mapped here etc... Unfortunately, a poor choice of heat shielding material against the bulkhead, and OE heatshield removed, would have left the car as a fire hazard if it had been used and left there.

Do not use Household sticky back foamed silver foil fronted heat reflective material for an automotive heatshield.. this material is what you would stick behind household radiators to reflect their heat off the walls.

anyhows.. see below what happens when it gets hot vs some Actual Heatsheild materials like should be used in the engine bay..

    What not to use below

Aluminised Fibreglass Cloth-aluminised burns off but fabric remains intact

    3 layer embossed aluminium/ceramic composite

Use the Appropriate materials for your builds guys..

    Interesting!

    That ali/ceramic shielding is impressive!

Im using triple layers of ali heatshielding from a specialised insulation company. The type of stuff they wrap turbines/jet engines and AMG turbos with.

Ive got some sheets of the same design but in stainless and even titanium that the engineers reckon is even better aswell. Havnt tried that though.

epic fail for using foam backed household insulation tho.

it might be shiney surface but it could'nt be much worse for automotive heatshielding - scarey really.
he removed the oe stuff to install this instead - eak/woops

Worth noting that it isn't advertised as household insulation, here is the link from the bay..

Humm... although it is adverstised as exhaust heatshield it should also be noted that turbo applications are a little different to what this stuff suggests its for...

Exhausts on a motorcycle are unlikely to see the sort of heat that a turbo application will... when the amount of heat generated is enough to make metal glow red or in some case white hot then you know something thats 'foam backed' isn't really gonna cut the mustard...

I have used these people before and the products are good..

...even if thier website is ****e!... lol

Advice is to do a little research and of course ask on the forum if you are still unsure...

Although direct flame is a slight exaggeration on the heat generated, as propane burns at nearly 2000 degrees, that is mad. That radiator foil can't even hack the temperatures behind a radiator, let alone a turbo! Madness

extreme test - yes. but the proper materials copes admirably.. and when you run a k04 hard it is radiating some 900'C temps for quite some duration..
