my s4 has had a startup rattle for some time now and reading posts from a previus owner on here some time before i owned it
but its started getting worse louder and more often since i changed the oil a few weeks back. it still only lasts for about 3-5 seconds and stops after that just getting louder and seems to be affecting the idle while it dose it and i think its started making a constant faint ticking noise now to.
iv been having a look round on the net tonight and read one artical about changing the tensioners with the engine still in the car is this worth trying ?
or dose the hole lot need changing ?
i remember reaing a post a while back where some one replaced almost everything after one of the guides becoming damaged but for the life of me i carnt fined it

I had the chain and tensioners replaced on mine at 85k due to the infernal rattle - its a huge job and to be fair, now at 105k the rattle is back - i change oil every 10k (not longlife, just a premium quality) and it has some effect - but this noise is so they say a characteristic of the car.

It was done at a specialist, cost about £2.5k but that included a DMF and clutch. Engine has to come out so it's advisable to change these parts whilst your at it. Actually I have had the above, plus alternator and starter motor too. If you are keeping her for a while worth getting these changed as they can all wear out from 80k onwards.

as said has to be engine out and also things such as starter, crank sensor and all timing related parts should be changed as these areall virtually impossible with the engine still in the car
