Worn gearbox mount?

I've had an annoying knocking noise coming from the front nearside of my fwd 1.8t for a while now. Currently I have replaced top mounts and bearings, wishbones, arb main bushes and drop links and track rod end. I have noticed quite a bit of play in the gearbox side mount if you rock the engine forwards and backwards and thought maybe this could either directly or indirectly be the cause of the noise? I have to admit I don't think it is as I would expect more of a clonk on pulling away/braking whereas this is almost a rattle over bumps. Should the mount be solid with no movement? Also I replaced the wheel bearing on that side as there was a bit of a droning noise which is still there. I wondered if the mount is badly worn if it could be putting extra stress on driveshafts, cv joints etc and causing that noise. I don't think it's tyre noise as I swapped the front wheels over (non-directional tread) and it stayed on the same side.

Just read this back and it's a bit of a two-fold question really.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!
