I would be looking at the engine mounts first I think if you can get to them. On my A4 the engine mount basically disintergrated on the engine side and was in a few pieces. There is a possibility that the positive supply to the mount could be shorted there.Thanks a lot for the explanation on how to use ELSA diagrams it's been very useful.
With regards to problem 1 (short to ground) - I've found a solid ground to use for testing the fuse, and found it's a fluctuating short 0.1-0.5 ohms (after zeroing out the probes). it instantaneously blew the fuse after replacing it, and bridged relay A which isn't turning on (which is the second problem on the control of the relay or the relay itself being defective) - will worry about this after.
What I'm doing now is got the meter connected and just disconnecting connectors which I can access. it's very cramped
