OK, I know all about the horror stories about the wiper motor when installing HID kits, just throwing this out there......
Has anyone thought or fitted a relay to the wiper motor and run it straight from the battery and separated it from it's circuit to protect it??
I've read some some people cut the earth and connect it straight to the - on the battery but why not go all the way and separate the whole thing??
Just wondering!!!!!!!!
 
Why do more of a job when the solution is simpler? All that is required is to separate the negatives/earths so I don't see a reason to bother changing the positive as well.
On another note I did this earth separation and fitted a 'canbus safe' hid kit from WeSellHID's in Bradford, they claimed the kit was 100% reliable blah blah blah..... It didn't blow my wiper motor but I had 1 bulb go faulty and 1 ballast go faulty, I also went through 4 different sets of LED and normal sidelight bulbs all from different suppliers and they kept blowing. The last straw was when I went to replace the 4 the set to find that the inside of my drivers side headlight had melted/set on fire.
My misses was driving the car at the time that the error light came on the dash saying the sidelight was out so as you can imagine I was not best pleased.
I ripped the kit out and replaced my headlight, guess what.... I've not had to change any side lights since the kit was removed.
I'm sure you can make your own assumptions on this oh and I contacted WeSellHID's who were not at all interested.

Just be careful fitting HID kits mate
 
Yeah, I understand what your saying. I'm not interested in just sticking a HID kit into reflectors, they are terrible and p**s me right off when I see a car with them in.... Or don't see them because I'm blinded!!! Rant over!
I have fitted proper HID compatible projectors into my lights, got the stuff from across the pond, there big time into light retrofits.
I've split the earth and connected it straight to the battery but don'the know 100% if this will protect my windscreen motor!

Just get a WellDone wiper safe kit, i have one its been great for months and so have many others. Best 100 quid iv spent, plug and play

Hi Robin,

You can't avoid the wiper motor problem just by adding a filter or relay, nor powering the motor directly to the battery.

HID ballasts use 26.000v to power on the bulbs.
This 26.000v will create an electromagnetic field that will most likely interfere with your motor.
The interference is spread by air, not by cables. That is why all the solutions you mentioned will not work.

The only aftermarket HID that can be used in the A3 is the special HID kit we have developed specially to avoid the wiper motor issue.

Besides our A38P HID kit you can only use A3 OEM bulbs & ballasts.

I don't fully agree with your point! If the high voltage EMI/RFI was to affect electrical components then it would affect everything electrical with the risk of damaging everything not just one thing!

We just try for people to avoid the wiper motor problem.
Can believe it or not Robin... but it is a proven fact, not an opinion.
Have been working on this issue for the last 9 years.

I recommended to A4 owners on this forum and others to shield the HID kit with Aluminum to avoid the high voltage interference.

We have quite experience about this topic.
We found the problem in 2008 after years looking into it (Interference due to High Voltage)
Designed a new type of HID kit specially made for A3 in 2009.
Solved the interference problem in the A3, A4 B6, Peugeot 407, Volvo...

That is the reason why everybody recommends our HID
A3 owners around the world have made more than 10 Group Buys for the A38P HID kit.


I've contacted welldonehid last week and they said that this week a groupbuy comes up,

They have great (wiper motor safe) hid kits
Personaly i like there a3 8p headlights because you get the best light cutoff

I have factory xenons and wouldn't have it any other way.
As above, Welldone have some good kits that are designed to counter Audi issues.

You can use a wiper motor safe HID conversion kit from Well Done hids have a search and there is plenty of good reviews from people who have purchased sets on this forum

If you look further down the 8p section there is a group buy running with 20% the listed price

Using Welldones for 1year. Wipers work even better than before :D

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I had previously blown 3 wiper motors on my car with HIDS4U kits.

After doing my own research I bought Welldone kit and it's been working perfectly ever since. The kit is high quality and the communication with Welldone has been very good.

I was going to say there is a new group buy, but I see that you are already there.

I totally understand what you are saying (I am a qualified electrical engineer) and to make a system that doesn't produce any EMI/RFI is a good thing that stops the problem.
Personally I have fitted ferric rings to my wiring to help stop any interference .
What I was trying to say was there is a problem with the wiper motor, not the HID light system.
I work with 400,000v to 25,000v electricity on railway systems that have a lot of EMI/RFI. The way to get around it is by making sure everything is earthed correctly. If it is earthed correctly the very sensitive system we use ( signalling, points, communications etc) are well protected from induced voltage. As soon as the earthing is removed, induced voltages happen and things get damaged!
From my experience, as long as things are earthed correctly, induced voltages do not effect them. I do not doubt that your system works, just that there are equally good fixes for this problem.

I registered just so I can post on this subject.:) I have Peugeot 407 2.0 HDI and I had bear extreme and Philips AC can bus 6000k HID kits for 6-7 years, no problems...nothing. A couple of months ago I had to replace them as ballasts was about to die and I could not find Philips or bear again so I had to buy some other no-name brand.15-20 days after that, my wiper motors died.:( Now I'm scared to buy anything else and I have been driving with OEM halogen bulbs and its horrible. Absolutely horrible

I would like to buy Well done HID as it seems they work great but that's not going to happen...I live far away and price + shipping + my country border fees would make that too much. Can't spend 300-400e for 2 bulbs on a 12-year-old car.
So can someone please help me how can I do this?

Ferric rings are just ring made out of Iron right? Do they need to have a certain specification or I can get them at any hardware store? How did you mount them, Robin, can you please send me a guide everything that I need to do? Also are you sure those rings alone are enough to stop interferance?

Try t8ups, EMTuning for parts, he might ship to you. If not try The Retrofit Source.
Ballast, I wouldn't use anything but Morimoto. As for ferric rings you can get them from Ebay for pence. I just installed them over the wires going from the ballast, I have since taking them off after upgrading my head unit and I don't get any interference anymore. I did add extra earth wire to the wiper motor straight to earthing point by the battery. If everything is earthed correctly then you shouldn't have any issues. I would definitely stay clear of cheap ballast. They cause all sorts of problems.
 
thank you Robin. I would love to get Morimoto but there is no licenced dealer for it in my country so with shipping it would be 250-300 euros which are not an option atm, unfortunately.

Can you please give me a link on eBay for ferric rings which I should use? Is there a specific type or I can use any, like these on the link.

Also if I use this ferric rings, do I have to make separate ground for wiper motors? It would be great if rings are enough of a protection.
These questions may sound silly to you but 99,9 % of mechanic's and car electricians in my country does not wanna bother with anything like this and I would not trust them to do so. So I need to know specific details about everything.:)

But make sure they fit over the wires. You can get different size.

Yes, definitely make a separate earth connection for the wipers. This is what happens when running non OEM HIDs:-

It's easy to do. From memory I just found out which was the earth wire at the wiper, cut it then ran some good size wire under the panel where the wipers are to the main earthing point from the battery. Took me about 15 minutes in total.
 
thanks, man a lot! There are 5 ferric rings on that kit, is that enough for both sides or I should get 10 and fit 5 on each ballast wires?

Ok, I have to find some car electrician to do that wiper grounding...that's gonna be painfull to explain :)

The best HID kit i can find in my country are some CAN BUS Philips ( probably knockoffs ) H7 kit. They are arround 80-90e . I used those for 3-4 years without problems.
