Wife has a qashqai but wants something bigger and better, (budget up to £20k) I'm thinking choices are:

    Merc ML series
    Land Rover freelander 2
    Honda CRV

She only does about 4k miles a year so mpg not an issue, but nothing too powerful like the AMG version

Anyone had experience of any of these? Want something reliable as well. I'll be driving it for long journeys as well as likely to cost less than the S4 so needs to have some power to it

    Cheers

Petrol or diesel? If the latter do they have dpf as want to avoid that as she'll do small journeys each day

What's the boot like? Need something bigger than the qashqai so thinking it might have to be the tourag instead of the Tiguan

My dad has the new shape CRV. Nice car, very comfortable, roomy, but abit boring inside.
What about a secondhand Q3 or LR Evoque?

The evoque is quite small though isn't it, but doesn't look very big

I would imagine the evoque is quite small. Never actually been in one though. A Q3 would probably be too small as well then. Q5 or Q7?

Also evoque seems out of the price range

Q5 looks good actually but only manual though as not having another stronic in the house ever again after my issues

Q5 is well proportioned. If she likes her Qasquai what about the new X-Trail?
I'm not fussed about any of the three on your list, sorry. Mate has the CRV Black Edition but even that's a bit boring looking.
I've been down the large SUV route in the LR Discovery and small SUV in the MINI Countryman. Out of them both I wish I'd stuck with the Disco. Having been in the baby SUVs I don't really see the point in them and that's from someone with a knackered back who likes high ride heights!'

I do like the new x-trail a lot but out of price range, countryman in my eyes is just a tall mini.
CRV wise would be the older version but would need the aero pack.
Disco is too big unless it's the new sport version, but then it's too expensive..

Tiguan 150/170bhp is the 2.0 TDI and has a DPF: an absolutely pointless engine if you're doing 4k/year in short journeys. In fact, all the Tiguans are TDI's as far as I'm aware, although I may have missed a model

With that mileage she really wants something with a petrol engine: a diesel will never get up to temperature (not great for the engine long term) and they all come with DPFs nowadays which really don't like lots of short journeys.

I had a 2.7 V6 Discovery Auto and did 5k a year in it. No DPF issues at all and no engine problems. As long as you give them a boot up the motorway every now and again you'll be fine. I've only had one petrol out of last 9 cars and all done 5k or so per year without any DPF issues what so ever. I've now got 1.6 TDi and it does the same mileage.
Treat any diesel properly and miles covered shouldn't matter.

I can recommend a GLK 350 4matic since I own a used one and it really is a fantastic machine.

The steering is very direct with the correct amount of weight for a reassuring drive with soft and comfortable suspension and you barely hear the engine sound it is very quiet!

It gets decent gas mileage and has enough room I think plus reliability is great being a mercedes.

    Really?
The freelander 2 is pretty reliable these days, the original freelander could be a nightmare in the petrol engines. The fl2 is a totally different car and is thought to be the most reliable of the Land Rover range. Don't get me wrong they can have issues but every marque has issues nowadays- just look at our audi's, I almost bought a a4 dtm until I realised it has the BUL engine and was told by an Audi technician not to go near one as they can be troublesome.
I'd go for the freelander if I were you......... Or with that budget I'd be more interested in a ford ranger limited/wildtrack or perhaps an amarok

Any known issues with the auto box on the SD4's?
