When does the cambelt actually need changing in an S3 8P

Ok so my mum got her TT TDI cam belt changed this week. I thought that was a bit strange as its a 2009 with 53k on the clock. Apparently it needed doing as its over 5 years old.

This got me slightly worried as my S3 is 5 years old soon and has 54k on the clock.

I've checked my service schedule and it says the toothed belt doesn't need changing until 114miles. Theres no mention of 5 years. You'd be doing well to be doing nearly 23k miles a year!

    researching on t'interweb including ASN there are a few opinions on when it should be changed;

    4 years or 60k miles
    5years or 75k miles
    75k miles, no timescale
    60k miles no time scale.
You don't need to change it because its chain driven.

    Now I'm confused????

Does anyone know the actual mileage or age it needs changing?

    Thanks

I'd say yours is due. I did mine at 60k and it was 6-7 years old, the belt was quite worn when we took it off

Mines a 58 plate early 2009 and Audi sent me a slip to say my cambelt was due last year. They said on it every 4 years or 75000 miles for my car.

    Doesn't the 8p update S3 have a cam chain?

Has both, cam belt only drives one cam and there's a chain under the rocker cover that drives the other cam

Mines not a S3 but the interval on mine was something daft like 110,000 (Audi appeasing company car buyers) but then they revised it back down

I would never leave that belt more than 60,000 or 5 years whatever comes first. And always change the water pump at the same time as the timing belt kit

From what I've seen these days the belts are very strong. I've seen some taken off after 50/60,000 miles and they look as new. It's the roller thingies that collapse. Seen that few times recently

I would say every 70k miles is recommended to get it changed. Your regular service around that time should do an inspection.

Yes you get all the roller thingies in the 'timing belt kit' and you need the water pump too

2.0 FSi is 75k or 5 years whichever comes first. Had timing belt kit & water pump done in October this year @ 98k & came to just under £360 at a main dealer non-Audi. The previous owner had the timing belt done in 2010 @ 64k by Audi main dealer.

Chain drives are only on the TFSI's and only need changing when they become rattly/noisy. They started fitting them in 2009 so you need to check which version you have.

I asked this question last week at Audi Notts. They now say 5 years no matter what the mileage. My car will be 5 years old next September at 50k miles, LOL. Oh well, best save up for that service!

Had mine done this year as it was 5 years old. Only on 40k but I'm not risking it. Will cost a lot more if it goes. I payed £500 at main Audi dealer and got 2 years parts and labour warranty and free mots for life.

Just had mine done. It's a 2006 and done 68k so was WELL overdue. I think for peace of mind you just have to get it done - needless to say if you just let it fail (eg on mway) it was cause extensive damage to your engine

I stand corrected on this - it looks like the EA888 was not fitted to the S3 8P, based on all the engine pictures I can see of S3 advertised on Autotrader. They all appear to have the older EA113 engine with a cambelt.
Whereas the Octavia VRS appears to have the EA888 engine from 2009 onwards.
