Wheels and lowering?

Hi all, new member and this is my first post so be gentle!

2 weeks ago I picked up an A4 Avant S line Quattro for my wife and have already managed to get a few things done.

So far I've had the alloys refurbished in anthracite, painted the calipers, fitted a tups led light kit including front fog lights and number plate lights and also had the car fully detailed including machine polished to freshen it up.

Next on the agenda is to lower it 30mm and pick up a set of 20" rotors or segment alloys.

So my first question is without going to coilovers, is there a spring kit available to give the required drop? I'm aware that the s line is lower than standard but I'm not sure how much by, but don't want less than a 30mm drop.

Second question is what width and offset of alloys do I need to run to give the least chance of any rubbing?

    Thanks for any help guys!

Here is a pic of the car as it looks just now....

I did coilovers then later on air. However i heard very good things about the Eichback and bilstein combo.
Some lowering spring sets give you very visible front rake where the back looks much higher, H and R springs are reported to do this.

by Combo I mean Eichback lowering springs and Bilstein B8 shocks.

    30mm drop
    https://www.bilstein-shocks.co.uk/collections/bilstein-b12-pro-kit

    40mm drop
    https://www.bilstein-shocks.co.uk/collections/bilstein-b12-sportline-kit

Pricey at 500, however buy cheap buy twice, I bought cheap £150 coilover kit from FK for mine, sold it after a year because it felt horrible and i had bought air, the cheap coilovers ruined the cars driving but looked super low which was my tradeoff given the price (I told the buyer they felt nasty but lowered well), then after they had them only a few months all the shocks blew, they only done 10k on my car and a few on his, and was less than 14 months old... would never buy cheap again.

oh, didnt see your second question sorry, 8.5j - 9j et38 is good amount IMO if you dont want rub and want relatively normal size tyres + comfortable driving, (40 is ok too but more regressed in the arch so I would be inclined to go wider width with that offset)

You can run 10j et 35 maximum, but is aggresive and needs camber and stretch, however with these I have no rubbing and have run that spec 2 years.

Are you wanting a 30mm drop on top of what you have now?

I went from standard s4 to 40mm H&R Springs with 245/30/20 on 8.5j I can check offset for you can't remember, but no rubbing at all

I've gone for 8.5x20 Rotas Et35 with 255/30/20 rubber Eibach Sportline springs 45F/35R and have shaved the rear mounts 10mm to level it out, standard Sline suspension ride is really good for 20s

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Dsport, that's exactly the look I am after! Was the eibach sportline kit a 45/35 drop on an s line, or is that the drop on a non-s line model?

Chop, what's the difference in ride height between an s4 or an s line?

What's the better option, eibach or h&r?

    Sorry more questions than answers!

think they quote for a none S-line mine is an S-line model it's come down about 35mm
I can't comment H&R on Audi but had them on a Bmw and it was too crashy for my liking

Are you sure those rotors are only 8.5" wide as they look like they have a big concave on them??? I am looking at 20" rotors but I really want the concave and the only ones I can find are 9" wide and with the offset being et35 only they have far to much poke.

I'd go with Eibach, for the simple reason they lower the front more which reduces understeer

I've been looking at eibach's as the general reviews are they aren't as harsh as the h&r's. Unfortunately because the car is a Quattro it doesn't look like I can get the sportsline springs, only the pro kit which is 30mm lower on a standard car not a s line model. With the s line being lower the eibach pro kit will likely only give 10-25mm drop which isn't worth the £180 outlay!

Anyone with a Quattro s line that has lowered with springs only and if so how much lower is it?

    It's a 2009 2.0tdi Quattro

The weird thing is I looked at that link about an hour ago and I was sure it was in English and also showed the sportline kit available for my car, but now I look at it and it's in German and only showing the pro kit available.... Must be losing my marbles!!!

Actually your right I've just looked again and they are 9x20, there is still not enough poke on the rears, I'm working on them at the moment, as still not happy with the look and height of the rear

Well guys, thanks for all the help with this. In the end I emailed eibach uk and asked them, apparently the sportline kit doesn't work with the Quattro due to the load weight on the axle. The only kit they do will only drop the car roughly 15mm so not really worth the hassle.

I may need to look at h&r to see what they can offer.

    Thanks for all the help!

I have H&R springs on my s4 as a stopgap until I get some coilovers. They are pretty hard and crashy tbh but I couldn't face the standard ride height any longer and should be upgrading to coilovers in the near future

Bit of a thread resurrection. I finally picked up a set of the 20" rotors I've been after and trial fitted them in the car today, needless to say it's definitely going to need lowered.

So this brings me back to what to go for. H&R look like they do a 40mm drop but the few people that have mentioned them have said they are pretty hard.

The other option is the eibach kit wth the lesser drop, the pro kit I think it's called.

I am also considering AP coilovers but I am unsure of the ride quality - can anyone comment?

Ideally I want the ride quality as close to standard as possible.

Here's a pic of the car after the trial fit of the wheels today

Thanks for the links. It looks like the h&r kit is the only one available out of those options for my car as it's a Quattro.

I've got ap coils on my b6 S4 and a mate of mine has them on his 335i.

For the money you won't beat the ride quality, I was sceptical before I bought them but they ride so much better than stock in the 2 platforms I've driven them on

Thanks RyanJon, I am slightly swayed by the AP's, how much of a difference is the ride quality against standard s line suspension?

If only eibach made the 45/35 sportsline springs for the Quattro I wouldn't have had all this difficulty choosing!

Those 20" Rotors look well on the car, but as you say, needs a little drop to perfectly finish the effect off. Wondering what rim width and offset you went for in the end .... and with which tyre size ? Any rub as they are at the moment ?

They are 9x20 et35 with 245 30 20 tyres. Ideally I would have gone for 255 tyres but this is what was available at the time. I'm not running them on the car until the weather improves as I don't want the salt to eat away at the diamond cut parts so can't comment on any rubbing although I don't expect any as it is, possibly once it's lowered a bit, but will deal with that if it happens.

Car is at Audi for warranty work. Will measure when I get it back. Think it's about an inch maybe less. Front sits perfect. I'm running 19s

We bro has 20s and not lowered and his gap is less than my one.
