I can't understand why my s3 would wheel spin from the front wheels. Esp in the wet surly the whole idea of a Quattro is so the wheels don't spin.
I know it's not a full time Quattro system but surly that's when it should kick in?

any thoughts or ideas

Can you feel the back end kick in at any point?

Just thinking you may have a haldex issue....?

How badly are the fronts spinning, little/lots?

no can't feel back end kick in, I was stuck on a hill back in the summer in a load of gravel, and I honestly could not move as the front wheels were just spinning

I get a lot of spinning to the point where it kinda bounces and shudders

Something isn't right haldex wise, wet traction should be pretty much absolute. The only time i've ever managed wheelspin was in snow and that was all 4 wheels.

What year is it? I think the older ones had a fuse in the system, which if you pulled it out (or if it blew) the car would only send power to the front wheels . The newer ones are a bit more complicated than that though!

My mate has just had the same issue. Came up with an intermittent fault on the hydraulic pump but the garage thought it was more than likely the Haldex itself was at fault.......with the map on it would spin all the way through 2nd gear. We put it back to standard and it wasnt so bad.....

he just changed it for a B8 A4 lol. Trader beware!! Lol

The fronts should only spin if the rears are too (for example, on sheet ice or wet grass). If you can get them to do anything more than a wee chirp before the back starts pushing then you've got an issue. Sounds like it might just be loose/blown haldex fuse.

Normal operation of the 4wd is that you#re aware of the rear coming in to play, but you shouldn't even notice the fronts start to slip before it does.

Checked fuses all are ok back to audi tomorrow then. They always make me feel there's nothing wrong and that I'm bothering them. But there checking it out again from what I've been reading its a good chance it's the haldex pre charge pump. So I'll mention that and see what they say

Is there nowhere else you can take it?

Where abouts are you based, maybe there is a specialist near by?

I stopped taking my cars to main dealers as they were useless and expensive with it.

That'll probably be why they're fobbing you off then ...hoping the Warranty will run out before you realise there is something wrong.

Then take it back and refuse to leave until it's fixed if they keep fobbing you off.

Be firm but no swearing or threatening behaviour etc

My pre charge pump failed at 2 years and 10 months in.... replaced under warranty.

No warning lights, just spun the front wheels, and when accelerating hard, if the front wheels hit a pothole or uneven bumps in the road, the steering wheel would "tug".

The only other discernable symptom was that when the key was turned to the ignition position, you could not hear the haldex pre charge pump charge up to pressure - but this is fairly silent anyway, so unless you know how to differentiate this from the fuel pump, a VCDS scan will show the fault.

Took it to audi and again the usual "it's seems to be running fine sir". If the s3 4x4 system doesn't work in wet conditions or on gravel then really when the f@&@ does it work. And is the point of it!

is there anyone in the northwest with an audi s3 that I could go out in to see what there s does in a similiar situation?

No need for CAB, just take it back, show them the code and tell them you want it sorted. Then explain that you're not happy with them fobbing you off, as Dean said, be firm not rude.

Yeah they should have spotted that...or told you about it when they did.

The only times my fronts lose grip on their own is when pulling out of a specific t-junction with a loose-ish road surface, a little scrabble for grip and then the back kicks in and off I go.

Audi phoned new today with an update and yes they have found that the haldex pump is faulty and are replacing now! Only after I vcds scanned it and took it in with a print out!
now I took the audi in last year with the same fault and told there was no fault, now I'm thinking I've been driving it with this fault all this time because of there incompetence! And I will ve explaining this but my car is due it's first mot and it's fourth service due you think its worth asking to do this as complimentary as they have messed up so much in the last year

I would be looking for that, yes.

In effect you have had to prove what is wrong with the car for them to correct it.

In all honesty I would look for somewhere else to do the work as they are coming off as incompetent!

Get what you can out of them and try a different dealership for warranty work. For everything else i.e. servicing, use a local VAG specialist.
