Hi all,

Last couple of weeks I've been getting a humming sort of sound in my car. Sounds like a loud tyre roll sort of noise and seems to be coming from the driver side. Took it to the garage near me (turns out they specialise in Audi which I never knew) and the guy there said it sounds like a wheel bearing after a ride in my car. I've booked in for them to have a proper inspection when I get back from Shropshire just wondering if anyone here has had these replaced and the sort of cost I would be looking at? Or any other ideas on what the sound could be?
Cars on around 76k miles and the noise seems to be getting worse. The sound of the noise increases with acceleration and can be heard clearly when foot is off the pedal.

Cheers,
James

Hi James I ve had a strange sound on my A4 but after some hours spent online I decided to change my front tyres and the sound has gone maybe yours it s something else but it s worth have a look. Adi

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I did think about tyres. The guy said I could change them and see if the noise goes but they all have loads of tread left and not sure i want to change them for the noise to still potentially be there. Worth looking more into though cheers

If it's like the b6 it's a bolt off bolt on system. Couple of hours on the b6

I had a bearing replaced on my drivers front. If you look at the post linked below on my build thread there is a video so you can hear the noise.
Bearing is around £60 and I think labor was about 2 hours. The bearing is a very good fit in the carrier and really needs a press to get it out. normally I would tackle jobs like this but I don't have a press.

Ah brilliant thank you for that, sounds exactly how mine is sounding at the moment. I'll see what price they can give me for the bearing when I take the car back in. Unfortunately I've got to live with it for another week whilst I'm up in Shropshire.

Could try swapping your wheels front to back then you know it's not your tyre on that side at the front

I had one replaced under warranty and the other side failed shortly after. The genuine part comes in the carrier and a new allen screw, cost about £100 but no press required.

Does sound like wheel bearing but the wife's a3 had castellation of tyres caused the exact same noise, swapped tyres over stopped.

The SKF bearings are the same as the genuine item. They come with the carrier. The hub is what needs to be pressed out from the bearing and into the bearing.I was watching the mechanic who changed my wheel bearing and he was having issues getting the hub out of the original bearing and they have the correct press and tools.

I had a wheel bearing go,
Was quoted £300 mark by 3 garages, genuine part + labour.
However I had a friend do it in the end with TPS and had it done much much cheaper (around 100 all in i think)

Turns out it was the front drivers side wheel bearing. Not picked it up yet but hopefully it's all sorted now. Guys at the garage are replacing my rear taillight as well because two LEDs are out. £39 for the light which I thought was good

With wheel bearings, the sound gets louder when you turn the other direction and eases off when you turn in the direction of the worn bearing.

That is usually the case I have found over the years but wasn't what happened with mine Regardless of the load put on it the noise was the same and constant. Thats what makes it more difficult to diagnose a a bearing failure and to work out which side it is.

That's more difficult and when you start to think it's the tyres!!

Yeah I didn't notice it with mine either when I turned it was just a constant drone

Just collected the car.
Sounds completely gone thank god! :yahoo:

£159 including cost of the taillight.

Yeah seems like a fair price considering some of the prices I've heard from other people. The noise was driving me insane so I'm glad it's sorted

Good price. You must live up north ;)
