Whats this gap ?? Pictures inside

Ive just noticed this gap behind the air intake is it supposed to be like this or covered up ? I dont know why thre would need to be a gap surely more air would be good for my car ?

Supposed to be there, to let cooling air into the engine bay.

on the stock air box there is a connecting bit of plastic joining the front "air inlet" to the airbox piping.
