What temp does your S3 run at?

Guys - just had my thermostat changed (Tried it myself but couldn't get bolts off) but still not working.

Heats up to 90deg but after a few mins driving, the 49C trick showed the temp had come down to 40deg! Could anything else cause this? My cynical side is asking if the garage may be lying about changing it? Don't think the latter is the case though but not sure.

Mine sits at around 93 and pop up to 94 sometimes. I don't trust the temperature on the dash, so I use the trick leshkin showed me to set the climate control to output temperature.

Push the recycle [as in air recycle, if you dont want it to pull air from outside] button and the up arrow on the right [the fat one] and then use the fan up button to go to the number 49, and then push the recycle button again.
Been using it on teh cold morning to make suer that the engine is at the right temp before opening her up, as teh dash temp seems to round up, and not be very sensitive [that one ALWAYS sits at 90]

Some may have already know this [hey it was news to me] and I have NO idea if it works on all model engines.

Just been on a cruise and temp didn't move off 40deg. Swotched car off, filled with petrol and when I restarted it, the temp starting rising and was at 90deg within 1 minute.

Any ideas on what may be causing it? If the temp sensor is in the thermostat, what does the metal wire do in the coolant reservoir? Is it worth me changing this?

THanks

Wicked, it could actually be the temp sender thats faulty, have you checked that out???

Did a bit of googling and it could well be the temp sender. That'd explain why it's sporadic and i'm not getting overheating (like a dodgy thermostat may do) and the temp goes from 90deg to 30deg.

I can't seem to find any info on how to install a temp sender and the part numbers etc - can anyone help? Is this the thing that goes into the coolant tank in the engine bay?

Thanks for the help!

edit: been on Euro Car Parts - is it the bottom one of these? Guessing it fits in same place as on Golfs (found a link to guide on net for that)

From what i remember, you are better going for the green one, as it is an upgraded version, im pretty sure it will be this, so give it a go and see how you get on, hopefully that will sort it and you will be a happy bunny!!!

Mine is always on 90 degrees, except once in a while it goes up to 93-95. I then stop the car, let it cool off for a minute and then it's back to 90 for the rest of the day...

I have the green temp sender ready to be installed. Can you point me in the right direction to where it's located, perhaps with a picture...

Cheers

What a day i've had today!

Bought the green part and left it with the garage (as have to wait for coolant to cool down, I didn't have time and it's only over road from work).

They phoned to say it's the incorrect part so I went back to ECP who confirmed it is the right part.

I don't know where it goes so posted some pics and hopefully someone can help.

Where I think it shoud go - plug on coolant pipe to right of engine with 4 cables

Thanks for letting me know, should do the trick. DId your fuel economy get a bit better as im pretty sure mines not normal haha.

My engine code is the AMK one ;)

Since doing it i've been getting around 30mpg - for the last year i've never had more than 25mpg on the motorway! Plus car is less likely to bunnyhop and always starts first time even when off and on lots of times in a day.

Basically it's something that I should've done a long time ago if i'd have known. Plus take 30seconds to change.

Thought as much, gonna go down to euro parts first thing friday.

Thanks for your help glad i found this thread :sm4:

ECP didn't believe I had a square one and i went back twice trying to return it but they were saying my garage was incorrect. Went to GSF in the end plus their prices are cheaper than ecp.

Im going to sound silly but what does "GSF" mean. Trying to think what shop that is but it's late:w00t:
