I have standard 17s on at the mo but im going to be lowering it

Depends what look your going for?

As mentioned 10mm front and 12mm rear is the most popular option.

I saw a car running 20mm spacers (per side!) on the back last night (Golf Mk4), and it was lowered on coilies and catching its arches badly with the tyres. Wheels sat absolutely flush to edge of arch, but can't begin to imagine what the ride must have been like in it.

Another vote from me as per the recommendations above.
