I understand that this was used for phones back in the day, tried removing it but it leaves a big hole in the dash, i was wondering if i could use it somehow to charge my smartphone? Can't really google it because I don't have a clue how to name this thing :)

That's the baseplate for phone prep
Depending which phone you have depends which cradle you buy that plugs on to it

That my friend looks like a Nokia phone cradle to me if it was fitted by Audi you would be surprised how backward the car manufactures are with there car stereo's the Audi RS4 had an option of a cassette radio cd up until about 2006/2007 and a cassette storage holder for the arm rest it will also have a pink and black wire if I'am not mistaken this is the negative switch wire that goes back to the car stereo to tell it a phone call is coming in

get a universal phone holder and bond it with a good super glue to the main front of the cradle and if you can remove what you don't want or bond the new phone holder to the legs of that cradle and no you can't charge your phone unless you have a ten year old Nokia
