What is the recomended engine oil for S3 please

Why do you need 50 grade ?

If you are going to use a Mobil 1 with high builder spec approvals use ESP Formula .

This is certainly the biggest issue.
It's crazy they think it's a good idea especially on high power engines that likely see some abuse

Sales pitch for the fleet owners. Oh yes, you only have to service this one half as often sir!

Of course, you then have to use the same policy for all your models, lest people see through your ruse.

What stats are you comparing ?

Now between the two Mobil 1 5W 50 oils they have builder spec approvals for

Porsche A40
Mercedes Benz 229.1 & 229.3
VW 501.01 505.00

So the oil performance parameters look like this as a collective , so you take the total area achieved as the oils total performance.

2016 11 19 182803

Now Mobil 1 5W30 ESP Formula has buider approvals for

VW 504.00 507.00 and
Porsche A30

Now the two oils perform exactly the same but as well as being a C3 ESP Formula is also a C2 .

2016 11 19 182900

As you can see 5W30 ESP Formula out performs 5W50 New Life & FS X2 .

The extra fuel economy of C2 over C3 is gained through extra friction modifiers in the additive package , as well as fuel economy , higher power and torque outputs would be measured with a dyno .

Just changed my oil and filter today as I do once a year (no more than 3000 miles) and stuck with Quantum 5/40 full synthetic. It says vw502/505 on the back along with bmw longlife etc. Cost just £20 which includes oil filter. I don't really get the need to bother with Mobil 1 and other more expensive brands when the Quantum stuff is correct VW brand whether you go for 5/40 or 5/30 longlife.
I asked the guy in TPS and he agreed that the 5/40 is perfect for an annual change as I'm doing.
The way I see it most of our cars have around 100k or over on them now so the tolerances have changed a bit so can't really compare with a tight new engine. Don't most say that higher mileage engines should have slightly higher viscosity than from new anyway?
If you go on Opie oils and select our cars, all the options they give are for 5/40.
Also, our cars are now over 13yrs old so surely even the less expensive (don't mean budget or wrong spec) oils are better than the available recommended oil back then, so don't feel the need to keep putting the latest superseded spec in our cars. Most of us haven't owned them from new so they've probably been on the less favoured longlife service or even had incorrect spec oil, maybe with top ups etc from less fussy owners in the past.
Just an opinion guys.

Quantum is good and the cheapest approved VW spec oil .

However , 504.00 507.00 out performs 502.00 505.00 505.01 because of its higher basestock groups and additive package concentration .

The best bit is the viscosity , 5W40 Quantum Platinum is 13 Centistokes @100°C and 5W30 Quantum-Longlife III is 12 Centistokes , lol .

So thicker is negligible .

What stats are you comparing ?

Mobil 1 Peak Life 5W-50 --- Mobil 1 FS X2 5W-50

  • Viscosity, cSt ASTM D445:

@40 ºC 108 --- 104.3 (+3.7)
@100 ºC 17,5 --- 17.1 (+0.4)

  • Viscosity Index 180 --- 179 (+1)
  • Sulfated Ash, wt% (ASTM D874) 1,3 --- 1.34 (+0.04)
  • Phosphorous, wt% (ASTM D4951) 0,1 --- 0.1 (=)
  • Flash Point, ºC (ASTM D92) 231 --- 232 (+1)
  • Pour Point, ºC no data --- -42
  • Density @15ºC g/ml, (ASTM D4052) 0,85 --- 0.8499 (=)
  • Total Base Number (ASTM D2896) 11.8 --- 12.6 (+0.8)
  • MRV at -35ºC, cP (ASTM D4684) 29,244 --- 24800 (+4444)
  • HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ºC (ASTM D4683) 4,4 --- 4.4 (=)

The builder spec approvals count if you use that oil as long life oil, instead they don't count. Bardahl XTR 5w50 has any approvals, because it needs change every 5000 kms maximum, but it's one of the most better oil ever (price 30-35 €/l).

Now Mobil 1 5W30 ESP Formula has buider approvals for

VW 504.00 507.00 and

The two oils perform exatly the same regarding builder spec approvals, because VW 505.00 includes VW 504.00, but if you don't use oil as longlife oil it doesn't count.

That last statement is incorrect and something I've never heard anyone say before .

Oil confusion and misconceptions are infinate .

The different manufacturers specs have different performance parameters , some are better at economy , wear , sludge , soot thickening , piston deposits etc .

The oil that covers the "spiders web" the most is the better and more complete oil as in post # 44 .

501.01 505.00 does not include 504.00 507.00 , it is a seperate and much lower performing oil spec especially with regards to wear .

501.01 505.00 Vs 504.00 507.00

Felt like this thread didn't give me a straight forward answer so I looked it up in the manual.
For an s3 (p8 version upto around 2012) with a longlife service interval it needs to be vw 504 00.
There are probably lots that conform to that standard but I ended buying castrol edge 5w-30
This is the product spec....
SAE 5W-30; ACEA C3; MB-Approval 229.31/ 229.51; Porsche C30; VW 504 00/ 507 00

Hope this helps.

Good approved oil , but it's 4L marketing doesn't represent value whereas Quantum does and made at the same place in Belgium .

If you are going to spend Castrol Edge money , go for 5L Mobil 1 ESP Formula and Shell Helix Ultra ECT as they are both C2 and C3 .

Now C2 is the same spec but achieves better fuel economy through more friction modifiers in the additive package , whilest some won't be interested it means a few more horses and torque too .
