waterpump failed on me after a coastal cruise on sunday, shopped around at a few places for a replacement on monday had a choice of a gmb with a plastic impeller or a hepu with a metal impeller, went with the hepu it was more than double the price of the gmb but still about 35-40% cheaper than what the dealer wanted

Metal impeller pumps have a tendency to leak through the shaft... seen enough failures like this to not use metal impeller type... also there are a few 'metal' impeller pumps that use nothing more than a bit of bent aluminium as the impeller... these are proper sh*te...

Only pump I would use is genuine personally... the breaking up of plastic impellers is more related to them not being changed at the same interval as the belts... time/mileage will degrade then and if left they will fail... changed at the same intervals as the belt (5yrs/70k ish miles) then they don't give a problem...

Seen a few non OE pumps fail too...

Thanks I didnt know that, this is literally my first waterpump change.

I wasnt sure if the OE pump had a metal impeller or not and the dealer wasnt very helpful in that department, also the dealer has a 5 day waiting period and i need to get the car back on the road asap as im currently borrowing my mums 4wd tucson and its not the most economical vehicle on the planet.

I went with the Hepu mostly with the assumption that its a quality german brand and the reviews online were pretty positive. also bought the Continental conti-tec timing belt kit which is the same the dealers sell here in SA. they normally supply gates, conti tec or dayco belts afaik

luckily my cambelt service was almost due now so its just being done 2000 k's earlier.

hummm... looks like the top part of that has been peened onto the lower part of the impeller rather than one piece like others...

    Replaced some pipes

    image.jpeg

Got the S3 in August and it's been away at garage from October to last week getting
new dimpled and grooved brakes, pads, rear caliper, T belt kit, water pump, full service, haldex service, oil pick up pipe, coolant change, g12, new expansion tank, new hankook tyres, wheels refurbed, boost gayyyyage removed, new silicone pipes also.

All I need to do now is get it MOT'd, a detail, fit ramair induction kit and horse the life out off it as it a weekend car.

changed the waterpump and cambelt on sunday, what a mission and hopefully i dont have to do something like that soon again. :disrelieved:

also found out the water leak stemmed from the waterjacket and not the waterpump so i also had to replace that initially the spares shop gave me a 27mm mild steel waterjacket (they clearly dont know how to use a vernier) went to another shop and picked up a 28mm stainless steel one (correct size and much better quality)

the old pump is an OE pump and surprisingly had a metal impeller and not a plastic one (it looks a hundred years old though)

    old waterpump.JPG

    New Pump (the Hepu)

    new waterpump.JPG

and the belt (getting the belt on was a mission there was literally no slack and the tensioner piston was fully contracted) dont know if we did something wrong but it eventually went on after some motivation.
    contitech.JPG

Job done and hopefully i dont have to do one soon again. :coldsweat:

did the last owner fit a second hand water pump, that's a worrying sight, incidentally if you get a engine management fault due to incorrect fitment and need to move it forward backwards a tooth, you can just about manage without removing the engine mounts

it appears the previous 2 owners did take a helluva lot of short cuts that really irks me, even the tiniest of thing like the air intake pipe they managed to screw up, im trying my best to slowly get the car back to a pristine condition. The car ran fine on the test drive yesterday and i drove it to work today. and i bled the cooling system twice to make sure there's no air in the system. i'll just run a scan when i get home to check that everything is hunky dory.

I think it is a common story, I am no expert mechanic but the amount of simple fixes I have had to do, because the previous owner(s) took shortcuts, were lazy, basically lied. I think there was a generation of uncaring owners running around in S3s 8 years ago ruining them. I spent 3 hours removing a bolt because they used a bolt instead of an allen cap head so it was impossible to get to, I got 2 allen cap heads for 52pence from Halfords.

Wait and see. Certainly not a electrical eBay supercharger

I'm not showing what I'm doing just yet and I'm hoping it will all fit in the bay. It's going to be very tight with lots of things moved to make space for everything.

Lots of head scratching and fab work needed. I've had help from Stacey and pro race, Chris Todd and Norris designs.

It goes this way round, bottom goes into TIP, side outlet to charge pipe and vac hose points upwards [IMG]

It's easy to swap round, just undo the two hose clamps and swap the orientation and tighten it back up
