What car shall i get next?

The only mazda that has a rotory engine in recent years is the rx8, 3MPS and 6MPS are 4 stroke turbos, the 6 is 4 wheel drive too. Insurance on the E46 (even and E36) M3 will be stupid, at 28 with a clean licence and 7 years NCB I recon I'd still be looking at over 1k a year. The other thing to consider is even though you can get them for 8k there not an 8k car to run, the same applies to S4's.

By a sorted S3. Dane is selling his 280bhp one for just over £5K. It has had all the engine rebuilt so is ready to go hybrid or big turbo if you wanted more power in the future.

Hey Rex16, I think I've seen you on CRX-UK.

I've had about 5 or 6 Honda CRXs now, and natural progression for owners over there is to stick to the Honda reliability they're used to and get a DC5 Integra Type-R. Personally, I love my new S3, but equally, I can't deny the DC5. They're rapid, and the chassis setup is incredible.

Looks are dependent on taste but in my eyes they're gorgeous, and the 2.0 K20 engine in it holds fantastic reliability as well as really fun high-revving action. Probably one of the other good points about them is that if you're wanting to have it as a daily hack then you can quite comfortably drive it around on the lower rev-range and get brilliant fuel economy on top.

In addition, as there aren't that many of them around, they tend to hold their value well. If you take care of it and maintain it properly then when you come to sell it you won't be asking much less than you paid for it.

Hi mate, and if you put a Manf in one they go twice as fast! So you've got an Audi now? nice one...but for how long lol, I just got my A3 a few weeks ago and am loving it )

Are you the forum troll?

All you've done is suggest an horrible idea of an expensive to repair and old Porsche Boxster (£3k if the clutch goes on it for example - engine out job!) that people will look at with those IRRITATING Jeremy Clarkson-quoting eyes and think "Couldn't afford a 911", which although is a load of crap, still detracts from credibility.

You don't appear to know a great deal about what you're talking about.

Clearly you know what I'm like! I'll probably have it for a while, unlike some of my other ventures!

I picked up the S3 on Saturday - I do like the Audi build quality, although mine creaks quite a lot.

Jeez, have you driven both? They are very different cars with very different characteristics, but in terms of track performance they aren't a world apart by any means or by any sense (heavier 280bhp vs lighter220bhp). I was in front but could not get away, lol, stop the hating with jap cars man, they have their place, lol

I've had plenty of jap cars, i've had Honda's and I've had Porsches, I haven't had a DC5 but I had the pleasure of driving one (and being a passenger) round the track at Bedford.

Weight difference between those 2 cars is about 50-60kg and the power difference is about 65bhp, plus the Porsche is a finely balanced, mid-engined, RWD sports car, the Honda is FWD, front engined and the power delivery isn't very useable in every day life.

You're comparing a £15k car with a £45k car, it's not going to be too difficult to work out which is the better car.

I'm sure the Honda is very good for the money in some people's eyes, but lets be realistic, it's not a Porsche and it never will be.

I never said it was better than a porsche, I'd have my old 987 any day, but lets stop this mine is better than yours nonsense. though I do think you need to seriously check your source for the weight differences ;o)

I thought the Porsche idea was a pretty good one. I loved mine, best car i've ever had. For the record, my S3 has cost me more to run than the Porker ever did.

At least when he's old and grey he can say to his kids that he had a Porsche before he was 30, saying he had a Honda doesn't really have the same ring to it does it...

yea i am a troll - if you can not take a debate, don't create one and you are right, i do not know what i am talking about, those type r engines have LOADS of grunt

£3,000 to change a clutch on a boxster? proof? i think you do not know what you are on about !

A debate typically spans beyond "that idea is rubbish", unless you're from the campsite in Essex where it's normally followed by a right-hook.

I looked at the Boxster 'S' before buying the S3 and just found everything to be so expensive. For example the sensors in the exhaust; There are four of them and when one goes the other three tend to follow and they're approximately £160.00 each fitted.

You can pick up a 2002-model for ~£6k with a decent service history and around 70k on the clock.. But in doing so you're buying one that's going to be nearing a problematic stage where wear-and-tear parts will need to be replaced.

Having said that.. You can always get lucky!

I'd like to be able to have better things to brag about than saying I bought a 10 year old Porsche that cost me the earth whilst in my twenties. ;)

LOL a clutch kit FITTED from porsche will cost just over £1,000 - where did you get £3,000 from and if you do not believe me check.....

911 SBD Ltd (London,UKJ)

I'd go one further, you should expect to pay £750 for a clutch from a reputable indy specialist.

I'd leave them to it if I were you, they're fanboys who've probably got Honda bed sheets and matching curtains ;)

Interesting, that does contravene the information I was given by a third party, although naturally it's always subject to exaggeration.

Looking at that very same page as you are though - You'll note that it's nearly £1200 to change your pads/discs, and almost a grand for the radiators.

Say you take it in for a service and have to change the brakes and your clutch is beginning to slip - You'd be paying out over £3k. Ouch.

Ask your mum about the bed sheets, she spends all weekend in them.*

*Make a pathetic comment expect a pathetic response.

I assume you are reffering to me with that drivel, re-read the posts my good sir, I fear there is a fanboy here, but it aint who I think you were referring to.

EDIT/HINT - a mirror will give you a clue ;o)

if everyone thought the worst was going to happen no one would buy anything

i do not know about you, but when you buy a car, you make sure it's had certain things done, buying a car that needs a clutch (you will get plenty of notice as it;ll slip in 6th before anything else), discs and pads all round means you can haggle a lot, if they don't come down in price walk away, it's that simple, brake discs and clutches do not need replacing often so providing you buy one that's had that kind of work carried out before you'd be fine

Ok ok, before this gets out of hand, it's all just a bit of traditional ASN banter, lets not fall out. We all love cars right :)

If i'm absolutely honest, the Honda DC5 is not a bad car and it does offer a lot of plus points especially for the money. They do have very well tuned chassis and handle and feel exceptional for a FWD car. I'd not personally have one as it doesn't tick the right boxes for me anymore as I tend to find Jap cars in general are a bit dull, but that is purely just my opinion.

The Porkers are great cars, and yes they can be expensive to repair, although not as bad as people make out. Mine never cost me the earth to run and with a reputable independent and doing repairs like brake discs and oil changes etc yourself is probably much the same as a performance Audi.

In an attempt to bring the thread on topic, if I were the OP I'd have to think about what it is i'd want in a car, because the budget allows for a huge variety of choice. If it were me, and probably for my own reasons, i'd be looking to pick up a S1 Elise, because i've heard they're good, i've never owned one and if I didn't have the ties in life i'd be getting myself into one even if it were only for 6 months.

oh and S3's have sensors that brake, one of the expensive ones is the EGT sensor........ porsche are VERY reliable

This is very true, and back on topic, it might just be my biased view but the 987 just looks so much better than the 986, and the 987 are a little out of the price range, knowing the 987 exists would preclude me from getting the 986, even if it meant getting a different car altogether... did I mention the dc5........ joke, lol

You ricer, lol.

I've been looking at mk5 R32's recently purely for the noise they make! Can get a 2007/8 decent spec now for 11-12k, surely thats an option?

Cheers.
Simon

I have to say, if you want something that can move small planets from their orbits then I highly recommend the Jag, there is nothing like a supercharged V8 with nearly 400 bhp and torque to match.

However, the running costs will make your eyes water and your a**e bleed. I was getting 15mpg in mine....but it was worth it!

You could pop for an XJR and go for the gangster look....thats a wheelspin not a blown head gasket by the way ;)

hmm yeh the integra does tempt me id have to see about insurance quotes. i hit the magical 25 in january so that should help a tad

im not sure about evos and scoobys great cars but i hear they are a hassle to insure and the scooby especially is supposed to be unreliable. Plus the chavvie factor (dont really care too much though)

im sure the new mazdas move well but do they still have the rotary engine?

nah the mps' have a 2.3 twin turbo producing 256bhp out the box. inface most mazdas have conventional engines it's the rx-8s most recently that were produced with the rotary and they have ceased production for now. the 6MPS is 4WD too...

Dave mate let's do a deal :)

lol Dane if your car was black id consider it :D

S3 8L = £993
Nissan 350z 3.5L = £983
BMW m5 8L = £2348
BMW 330 Coupe = £900
Audi RS4 = £2336
Lotus Elise = £1700
Mazda 6 MP = £932

Nissan Skyline R34 = £2258
Subaru Impreza STI = £1819

and just for cracks

Well then must be a 1.1 saxo if insurance is a dictating factor Dave.
Or you could of course buy Dane's and with the money left over have some trick black paint job done on it ?

id never buy a saxo in my life! some good cars there for insurance around a grand suprised about the R32 being only £1065

i could do but its not really different enough for me. Kinda like having my car just with more power and 4wd

I know it's still above your budget, but the M3 based on the insurance quotes compared to some of the others stands out there.

Are you looking for practicality in a car?

Yeh i know what you mean. I never factored in selling my car so i could maybe go up to 9-10k.

Yeh some sort of practicality decent enough boot etc i dont wanna be one of these guys who gets a nice car then the missus pops one out and ill have to sell it coz i cant stick a buggy in the boot

correction M3 is £1983 on insurance. Just checked and the top one had a 3000 excess the next best with a normal excess of 500 was £1983. double checked the others aswell but they had a normal excess all is good

Lol if your missis pops one out it wont be the boot size your need to worry about it will be the additional strain on the wallet which will determine if you need to change the car or not.

Out of that list with insurance prices the 350Z stands out for me.

lol thats true although she keeps telling me it wouldnt cost much more money :)

im now thinkin r32 as they look really nice and are about 3k cheaper than the s3 so could probs just squeeze into my budget. Insurance is good aswell!

how much is tax on the newer s3? i heard 260 odd quid for 6 months that cant be right surely?
