What bike ?

I have found out my trusty 19 gear MTB is well below the task of biking and need advice on a good hard tail MTB within a budget of 500,can anyone point me in the direction of somewhere ?
 
Regardless of wich bike you pick i would recomend going to a big bike shop ie evans ,halfords etc and try as many different bikes as you can until you find one you like ,then search about to find the best price for your choosen bike .Bikes have come a long way and for £500 you can get a very capable h/tail with disc brakes and descent drivetrain .chainreaction .com is a good place to look when you know what you want ,wiggle is an other good site

eBay or buy a mountain bike mag and save yourself a few £'s :icon_thumright:

I've got a GT - Nothing flash but it's a nice bike - I used to ride GT BMX's back in the day...

Specialized is the way forward, i was looking to get a bike for the same price, and was told by a good friend who spend's the same on his many bike's as we do on our car's, that they are definitely the market leader and most innovative out there at the moment.

Rockhopper being his suggestion

I used to have Marin's when i was a nipper, would love a new one, but think Specialized will be my next one due to the above info.
 
Might be worth asking your employer if they will join the ride to work scheme, evans offer a nice discount up to about 40%. I'm in the process of getting my employer to join it giving me a nice discount on a specialized rock hopper complete with lights, lock, helmet, seat bag & pump for about £400. Personally i'd go for a MTB even if its just for commuting and maybe put some road tyres on it, IMO MTB's are pleasing to look at, relatively good riding position and you have the option to ride it more or less anywhere.

Dude ebay is going to be your best bet really, although there is a place in Brum on the Cov road next to the Maccies, im sure its a bike warehouse...

Oh and a slight hijack, anyone got an old BMX for sale or want to get rid of one???

Jason - if you've got your own ltd company there is nothing stopping you setting up your own bike to work scheme. The bigger bike shops (like Evans and Wiggle) now do all the paperwork for you so you don't have to worry about that.

I'm a contractor with my own ltd company, and I got myself a nice Focus Cayo from Wiggle last September (ok it's a road bike) but it is going to end up costing me me just over £500 over the year for a bike which had a retail price of £900 at the time.

Not being a keen cyclist myself, but I've been told by professional cyclists that Giant are a good brand and they have a huge selection, with 24 gears and within your price range. Even though you may have to travel 2 hours or so to try it out from where you are, but you can cycle home from there lol. (But I'm sure if you look there may be local stores that sell the Giant brand.) Good luck!

I'm just starting out so if it goes south I don't want to waste money (plus the missus doesn't know) so am being safe and going for something like this http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/4500-disc-2010-mountain-bike-ec020722 we have so much countryside nearby it just seems so silly not to have one also am buying my 8 yr old daughter a specialized hotrock one
 
I've always had GT's and to be honest wouldn't buy anything else.....

my mate is a hardcore biker and he recommended the trek for me so that edged the rockhopper out
 
Trek always get really good write ups in all the mags, they also seem to spend the most on advertising in those mags ........................ but they are regarded as one of the best makes tbh theres not a lot between Trek and Specialized Iwas looking at both but went for a Rocky Mountain just to be Different.

Hopefully I can get out tomorrow or monday for a good ride :)
 
did you end up buying the trek dude ? im into downhill and freeride myself so know a fer little bout bikes and setup's what kinda trails you looking to ride... up.. down... roots... rocks... can i ask why a hardtail ? take it your not into dirt jumping as your looking at an xc bike.. you will be limited if you wanna push yourself and have some fun.... you getting matching Lycra :no:
recently got shut of my Santa cruz V10, a very sad day but needs must..you cant go wrong with SC be it bikes or deck they really know how to make stuff for the riders
