Facelift Weird Tyre Wear on RS3 (FL)

I've had my RS3 for 6 months from brand new. It's had a couple of ongoing issues during this time such as the oil consumption and squeaky brakes. After going back and forth with Audi (as they could never replicate the brakes) they finally discovered an issue with 2 of my pads. Whilst replacing these they discovered that my 2 front tyres had worn on the inside of each tyre, one of them was so worn the beading was showing.

So I ask, has anyone else had tyre issues on their RS3, specifically wearing like this...

*Car has done 10,000 miles. It's my family car so a lot of those miles are easy driving.

10,000 miles on the P Zero’s is about the expected lifespan for most people, which I’m sure most will back up... some people are seeing the fronts go after 7000 miles. Mine are on 4.5mm all around at 7500 miles, mixture of driving but the wear is definitely heavier on the inside than the centre to outside of the tread, despite proper wheel alignment.

I’d put it down to wheel alignment out and just the amount of mileage done, change them and get the wheel alignment checked.

What issue did they find with your pads out of curiosity? We all have squealing brakes, mine are probably used heavier than average as I drive locally, stop starting but spirited driving on such roads seems to keep them squeal free... I will still replace them for Ferrodo pads when they go though got good measure.

IIRC I did about 12k miles of reasonably hard driving and they were shot to bits. Worth getting all the alignment checked but doesn't sound a million miles away from what is expected. Even the FL is still a heavy car at the front.

Well, if a dealer has discovered this wear but cannot give an explanation - then that is the final straw! It is basic mechanics for heavens sake!

Inside wear is alignment, camber angle or ball joint wear. To narrow it down further, is the wear pattern sharp on one side and smooth on the other? If so, then alignment.

The tyres have worn on the inside fronts of every 4WD Audi I have owned, torsion and haldex based.

Incorrect toe in is usually the main culprit, not camber, although it is exacerbated with neg camber. Neg camber on it's own is seldom a problem until the toe in is way out.

What is the outside edge and centre depth?

Found that tracking was out from new and after going to Audi twice to have the tracking done they still didnt get it right.

Ended up going to a local European car specialist who have a Hunter 4 wheel alignment machine and its been fine ever since.

I just checked my tyres and the right hand driver side one is down to the wire on the inside shoulder with the rest of the tyre not really worn that much.
The car has only done 8,000 miles since the last tyre change which was done at 9,000 miles.
The first tyre change had the same issue and the dealer said it was probably down to incorrect tyre pressure being applied.
Since then I've made sure it wasn't over or under inflated.
I have noticed a bit of a shudder at 70 mph so just thought the balance was a bit out.
The tyres are under the Audi Service plan so I'm getting my money's worth from that.
So when I go to the dealers I'll ask them to do a 4 wheel alignment so the tyres will last longer than 8k.

I was thinking of going to an tyre fitter to ask for a 4-wheel alignment to stop the wear on the outside of the tyre.

Anybody with alignment kit.

But find a place that has Hunter Alignment, it’s the best in the business and what Audi use... it’s commonly used now, can tell by the big hunter sticker in the middle of the laser bar on their alignment ramp.

I took the car for a wheel alignment over the weekend.
The front was slightly out but in the green with the rear was out and in the red.

They couldn't do one thing which I think was the camber but I could could have miss-heard what it was.
I will keep an eye on the tyres to see if there is wear on the inside.

It’s usually Caster that cant be adjusted.

No big problem.

As long as everything else is in the green and as close on each side as possible.

Mine was all green but still shredded the inside of the tyres, 3.5-4mm tread remaining otherwise.

Any ideas?

I don’t know how you’ve modified your car....

You say your alignment was in the green yet you have inner edge tyre wear on both fronts...

If you for some reason still have an issue you need to seek professional help, all people will do on here is second guess the issue.....

I have at least 19k miles out of my Pirreli RO2 tyres, even more on the rears. No issues on the wear either.
I would get the alignment checked at a professional place. Just because they have a machine doesn't mean they know what they are doing. I suspect the Tow will be the issue IMO.

Camber can be adjusted, by moving the subframe. Castor can at the least be equalised on each side.

If he needs advice the he should seek a true alignment / geometry expert.

How can we be expected to diagnose a tyre wear issue ? When he has already had it done.

There's clearly some underlying issue here that's making you grouchy (more than usual ) but for what it's worth, I think you're one of the most knowledgeable and generally helpful guys on this forum.

I’ve been to the professionals who have said they don’t know what it could be. You seemed to be well in the know, I thought I’d ask but I know better now, thanks anyway.

Gotta understand though bud, this is the internet and we're on a forum for motoring enthusiasts. We all care a lot about our cars or we wouldn't be here talking about them all the time. There's going to be people complaining here and there but it doesn't mean you need to respond to them. Back on topic though, I had a similar issue @AudiNutta. I have 4mm of tread left on the front insides when I measured yesterday but my outsides are bare, so I've just ordered a set of MPS4S' and will see how they fair. I've had a ****** good offer from Michellin themselves that if they cause any issues with TC (as has been seen from others) then they'll refund me in full! Couldn't say no to that.

All four Pirellis are now off and Michellin PS4S are on.

Some pictures below showing the weird tread wear on just one of the tyres. Had the alignment checked and it was all green too, tyre pressures also checked and kept within the sticker spec every couple of weeks.

Will not be going back to the Pirelli's unless they can sort out the uneven wear issues that lots of other owners are facing.

Yep, terrible isn't it?

Agree with these PS4S' though - the level of grip is absolutely phenomenal in comparison to how my Pirellis were; especially happy with the wet weather performance! We should have had these fitted to our cars from the factory.
