Hi guys.
Does anyone have a good idea what the following would weigh
Transfer box
Haldex system and diff
Prop shaft

Ive been toying with making the s3 fwd and i need to make a decision now its causing seriius brain damage to me.
I want to know what im able to lose weight wise

And yes i know im a **** but please help!!!

Sambo did it to his A3 Quattor, the one I've just bought. It's still FWD as it has the Gemini (Ricardo? can't remember now) FWD box in it, and most of the Haldex stuff is still at his.

I know a transfer box and rear diff can be lifted by one person in a crate. It's not light though.
I will have all the bits at some point. Dunno when I'll get around to collecting the rest of the bits though, so I can only offer you brain damage.
 
Im more wondering if people have ever refitted these parts so have an idea of what they weigh.
Not many people strip the s3 let alone get it weighed.

So sparrow are you saying a rear diff and transfer box can be lifted by one person at the same time or both individually??

Tuffty must know he's probably had them both out many times to polish them lol
 
Well my car weighs 1280kg and its pretty bare
Nicks is 1140kg with a cage.
A cage is roughly 40kg
So im 180kg up on nick and i dont see these bits weighing that?
Or will they?
 
Just remove it and be done? Keep the subframe and make the rear independent... Keep the front rear balance closer to 50/50 (not that it was with the Haldex in of course) and be the first on the forum to do it...

+/- 20 or so for any discrepancies, I'd say that's not far off.
I've held a gearbox, a transfer box, and I've held in place a prop which was surprisingly heavy. I'd say 150kg isn't far off inc rear diff and subframe.

Don't forget you won't be loosing all that difference, you have to keep the big rear subframe, so you will always be up on prawn a little.

There may be some fabrication involved but you maybe able to get away with using a stripped CV outer from the rear shaft to hold the bearing and flange on...

Appreciate you are paying someone to do this but its not been done on this forum that I am aware of so it will always be a bit of experimentation... most peeps go more power or FWD :)

I know Nick has considered this before though so think of it as a challenge... just don't go wanting more power after all this as you won't be able to put it down LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!! ;P

But nicks a very very good driver so he is able to drive it fwd.
I worry im too aggresive

Personally I would get the car as good as you possibly can with the haldex intact and then decide if you're happy with it.

Light weight windows, light weight wheels, remove AC (I believe you use this car mainly for the track?), light weight wing mirrors, delete everything you possibly can AND then if you're still not happy with the car remove the 4wd.

I have a spare haldex unit at home and I can lift it easily on my own. I would say it's less than 30kg. I can weigh it for you if you would like.

Also the prop is out so I could give you an estimate as to what that weighs as well. I'm not taking the rear diff off though :p

I also remember you complaining about turn-in and understeer. I don't know much about racing but I can't imagine removing weight from the rear of the car would help much. Perhaps you need a better suspension/tyre combination and more time in the seat practicing before you take drastic action

No ac
Hardly any dash
No carpets
Its pretty bare.
I just cant see where the extra weight is
 
Geez it sounds bare. Removed the amp in the boot? I would go with light weight wheels if you haven't already (once you get some $$).

Maybe do a few laps with the haldex disengaged to see if you like the feeling of pure fwd before you rip everything out

I have most of this in the garage that I could weigh. I just bought a load of spare running gear for the S3 (engine, gearbox, transfer case, prop, rear diff, haldex, shafts etc) as I figure the new engine might cause a few problems along the way. It'd be ghetto bathroom scales but should do the trick? I can tell you that the haldex and rear diff assembly mounted in the subframe is pretty easy to lift by myself. I can't do it this weekend as I'm away but next weekend for sure. I need to get in there and sort it all out anyway.
 
Blue haldex is obsolete, better options avialable now
 
They all pretty much do the same thing in the end (50/50). Happy with my blue controller. Certainly better than orange for most scenarios. The inserts mean parking noises and potentially increased wear. HPA would be nice if they've ironed out the issues and the price drops a little.

Purely talking performance here vs general driving

Blue's clutch disengagement under braking is extremely annoying

Attempting use the brakes to rebalance the car becomes cumbersome when you also loose rear end traction - eg lift off oversteer from the rear

Even more so when equipped with axle diffs which need to be fed power to work best

or it put it another way, it screws up your ability to control weight transfer with any finesse

I'm use to the benefits of 4WD engine braking too, which with blue you have choose between 'full' engine braking or disk braking

Remember with the inserts, you can rig a turnoff switch for the clutchpack for reversing etc

The insert makes the diff act like tight plate diff (aka old ford 4wd systems), not like a diff-less R5 rally car ;)

It's complex, and to feel the full benefits(or negatives), you really need to drive on the limit. Cut a long story short, the blue haldex will lock the haldex 100% on 50% throttle+, so under braking, the haldex is open, meaning the car is in 2wd mode. Now to make things even more complex, VAG decided that when you touch the brakes, the throttle is totally cut, as a safety feature, so you can't even use left foot braking and the right foot to balance the power/4WD etc.
The Haldex system ir primarily designed for traction and fuel economy, as opposed to a performance handling device.

I was talking about effect on central diff - eg feels like to the driver

Yep the inserts are ghetto, no doubt one of the touchscreen controllers would be better

But £350 - £400++ better on a tight budget, for a track car ?

imho the money saved would be better spent on other items to achieve a better overall car
