Today I took my 2016 Audi S1 with 13,000 miles to a service and was advised that the Water Pump/Thermostat Housing was leaking and needs replacement with some urgency. The repair cost was a whopping £900!

The car is only 3 months out of warranty.

I have noticed a small amount of coolant use whilst I have owned the car but thought this was just normal usage.

Further update to my Water Pump/Thermostat Housing failure. I was contacted by my local Audi dealer who offered me a “good will” gesture due to the low mileage, service history, and recent end of warranty. The replaced the faulty Water Pump/Thermostat Housing for under £300. I was very pleased with this outcome.

That said if any of you have an S1 under warranty and experience any loss of coolant suspect a failing Water Pump Housing and get it checked out.

Cheers for the heads up. Were there any visible external signs of the leak?
The Only visible sign was a slight lowering of the coolant level, the leak could only be seen from under the car when on a ramp!

I think I had the same issue, at similar mileage. It happened on the first day after I bought my S1 second-hand. I had issues with the temperature gauge maxing out. The dealer fixed it under their warranty so I never saw the bill, thankfully.

This is worth a watch on how these pumps can fail:

It seems the most important lessons are:
1. Don't spill oil over it (i.e. taking care when topping up your oil).
2. Take care to do the bolts up evenly when fitting a new one.

Mine emits steam from the radiator grill, and has since I bought it, reported it to the dealers who sold me it and a local dealer and they said it was just rain water getting on various things that get hot. Had it serviced at an independent a few weeks back and they found the water pump housing leaking, and in his words it has been leaking a very long time as their is lots of corrosion and staining. Just picked it up from another local dealership who charged me £75 to confirm it is the water pump housing and it would be approx. £850 to replace. Starting to hate Audi and think this will be my last !!!

Nice looking INA full kits on Ebay for a lot less than the dealer price, INA is a very good brand use lots of their bearings at work, as good as any other IMO. Check out item number 283792086168 :thumbs up:

Has anyone here ever owned a car where the dealers aren't just greedy money grabbing Tw4ts who deny you ever reported issues during the warranty period, then quote crazy prices to fix the things they ignored during the warranty, once it has ended ? I ask as I have learnt this is the way Audi main dealers operate and have treated me ( they are all just franchises, who in their own words could be selling burgers for Mcdonalds, if they weren't a franchiser for Audi ) and Audi UK who you would think would care about customer satisfaction and the reputation of their brand, are no better, and only listen to the lies/half truths of the franchises, who are hardly likely to admit : Yeah we fobbed the owner off to avoid doing the warranty work, when asked by Audi UK if a job card had been created for the complaint ? To substantiate the owner's report of being fobbed off in the first place.
I hope to find a brand where dealerships are honest and knowledgeable and will encourage repeat customers rather than the Audi approach I have encountered, shame too as Audi build beautiful cars.
In life I expect nothing that I haven't earned or paid for, and asked for nothing from Audi that I should not have gotten.
Any help will be appreciated, cheers :)

Sorry to hear all that. I know where you're coming from as I've been trying to get Audi to admit there's an issue with the S1 cruise control. There's confirmations of a software patch for it on two different forums but Audi still insist it will be a fault with the car and want to relieve me of £100 just to run a scan. Having got full VCDS I know there's nothing their scan will pick up so don't see why I should waste my money. They won't budge on it till I've handed over the £100 so I'm just living with it and hoping someone on here will disclose the answer one day. Not great for Audi though.

They definitely did fix it - my late 2017 MY18 car doesn't have the problems reported with the cruise. No idea if it require different hardware though. There are others who've had the problem but been told it doesn't apply to their car so that would indicate only certain hardware is at fault/fixed.

See if you can find an independent with access to VW systems like @DJAlix, they may be able to see the update and apply it for you?

Ah great cheers for that. I did try and get something out of Audi UK but they insisted there's no patch for it either. I think it's something they know about but because it isn't safety critical they want to save face and get as much money for fixing it as possible.

Sorry to complicate things but the cruise works fine on mine, the charge to confirm it sounds familiar though, I was charged £75 to confirm the coolant leak on my car, then quoted £850 to replace the water pump and housing. It was blatantly obvious it was leaking and had been for some time but they denied I reported it during the warranty period, when the fob off line was "it is just rainwater getting onto things that get hot"

It's such a well known fault on the EA888 engines, not sure why they were so reluctant? I know hindsight is all good but I think I'd have gone to another dealer given that response.

Just had mine serviced at my local Audi specialist on Friday and they have spotted the leak on mine, have a quote for £640 to fix with genuine parts. It's 3 and a half hours Labour because of where it's located. I had noticed the slight coolant loss but just thought it may use a bit like the oil.

Hi Folks,
What's the story with the theromstat / water pump on the EA888 engines?
Was / is there a recall on them ?
If so which variants of S1 with EA 888 are involved?
Thanks
Mike
