Watching DVD's on Ipad 3

Just brought an ipad, the biggest pull was to get my little boy something to watch in the car, whilst on the plane and then to keep his Mom happy also.

I thought getting a DVD on to it, would be simple, well if it is it's above me.

Has anyone done this and can you tell me how?

I have googled it, but get lost in the options.

Think you need to get it into itunes then onto the pad, it its owt like a ipod. I hate itunes with a passion bu have put a couple of videos using a free program first to compress the video then added it to itunes somehow. Sorry its years since I did it

I sorted it, but thanks for the reply.

I used DVD Shrink to rip the film to the PC, then used hand brake to convert to mp4, finally into iTunes (which I also hate).
