HI guys,

Just back from holiday and I have the following issue. ESP and Coil warning lights are on on the dashboard. Both rear light unit brake lights are NOT working (bulbs and wiring checked), however the upper brake light (I have an avant) IS working.

Brake pedal switch has been replaced and no change, IanFM has scanned the car and is getting multiple codes regarding ABS. Hopefully he will see this and post the codes which have been saved.

I'm hoping it's NOT the ABS control unit, anyone shed any light on this, MOT will be due next month….

Steve

The abs control units are prone to loosing their coding on these if you do any work on the electrics, also you have to be very careful that you fit the brake switch correctly as they're easily broken.

I've just had to recode a members abs module as it lost it's coding when he fitted cruise control. You need the full version of VCDS to do it, but it's easy enough to do.

Actually it might just have gone into system function test mode.

Have a watch of THIS VIDEO as it might be all you need to do.

This isn't over helpful, but I have heard of this before on here. There was a thread, I'll have a search.

Right guys quick update.

Just had it on VCDS and got the following codes:

Brake light switch has been replaced and tested prior to this scan and highlevel brake light works and VCDS shows Brake switch active when pedal pressed.

Anyone got any suggestions (preferably not the ABS module)?

If it is the ABS module can these be swapped out as 2 cars nearby braking?

Can you clear all those, take it for a drive and then rescan?

They come back as soon as you clear them!

Car is being driven daily for the last week after I cleared them last weekend.

anyone shed any light on this before I just go and buy a new ABS control module?

Can you two swap brake pedal switches? Just to eliminate that before big expense, as it's still showing the error code.

I've already done that last weekend. In total the car has had 3 different brake pedal switches installed one of which was and still is working in my car. In the appropriate measurement block in vcds it shows '0' when the brake pedal is released and 'activated' when the pedal is pressed.

Any VCDS guru's out there, MOT due soon and need to get this fixed ASAP…..

Did you check the module to see if it had 'forgot' it's coding like I suggested?

Have a watch of THIS video if you didn't, as it may be all you need to do rather than replace it. After recoding it (if this is the problem) you will then have to do the function test that I linked to earlier.

If you do have to fit a new module it will have to be coded to your car anyway as they won't work without learning to your cars VIN

Hi Jimmy,

Already looked at that video and I doubt it has lost it's coding, I also do not have a full version of VCDS anyway. The control unit is talking to the car and VCDS lite, plus I am not getting the fault code described for a non-coded unit.

In light of this, it looks like I will be ordering a new control unit unless anyone else can suggest something......

Ordering a new ABS control unit and then booking it in to my local indy to get it fitted/coded....... :sorry:

UPDATE!!

Turns out it was the ABS control unit, got one cheap out of a breakers yard, had it fitted and coded and it instantly flagged up a fault with the N/S/F ABS sensor….

All changed and now working fine again…..

Happy days….
