I posted a few months ago regarding a clunking/knocking noise from under my car (TFSI Quattro), I had it diagnosed at a local specialist as the rear diff and had that changed. The noise then became a constant vibration under acceleration up to around 40-50mph, relative to the amount of torque applied. I had my old diff looked at and it turns out it was fine all along!

I’ve had the car looked at by a transmission specialist, he can’t pinpoint the cause of the noise. I’m convinced it could be my propshaft centre bearing as there’s a decent amount of play in the bearing and some of the rubber looks perished/cracked. He says it isn’t this as the noise can’t be heard when driving the car in the air on a two-post ramp - surely there’d need to be some load/weight on the car to replicate the symptoms?

My questions to you guys:
- Has anyone experienced similar issues with vibration under load at low speeds/gears?
- Was it the propshaft centre bearing?
- If so, how is it replaced? It looks like the propshaft is all one piece, I’d rather not buy a second hand one in case it happens again

Cheers guys

What reg is car??
I’ve had same issue and it was centre bearing you can split the early shafts on B7’s manual box I did mine 2005 but need to be careful you don’t destroy shaft getting it apart took me and a friend several hrs to do but all was good after the repair good luck

Quite a late B7, it’s a 2008/57 reg 6 speed manual, are you saying on later B7s you can’t split the shaft?

Where did you purchase your replacement bearing?

Not sure about late B7’s but defo B8’s you cant split the shaft bearing came off e bay you’ll need to check holes on carrier on your bearing and check shaft size if I remember there was 3 different bearing sizes and bearing was around the £50 mark

Just had a look through the health check I had done a couple of months ago and noticed they picked up on leaking engine mounts. Didn't even think of this, has anybody ever dealt with worn engine mounts, what were the symptoms and how was replacement?

Ye I’ve done engine mounts not cheap my passenger side one went and dropped engine down struggled to get gears though it was clutch.
Not the easiest to do I supported engine took engine mount and bracket off to do it it’s well buried good luck

I've just bought a b6 quattro with only 80k on it but I have noticed a clunking sound too!
It only happens at very low speed 15mph and under, always when going up a slope or a steep hill very slowly in 1st gear.
Other than that the car seems to drive fine.

Slight update

Car's been at the specialist for over a week now, they've looked at my original diff and confirmed it's fine, they're going to refit it today and let me know how it goes. They've also changed the propshaft centre bearing and that hasn't changed anything. Apparently all CV/UJs are fine too.

He suggested flywheel but I'm not convinced, I don't feel anything through the pedal and as soon as I let off the throttle the noise goes, it's only present under acceleration, plus the noise was a clunk before the diff was changed, didn't think a flywheel would make that kind of noise.

Flywheel

Would flywheel first make an occasional clunking noise though? The vibration only started once the diff was changed, clunking/thudding isn't what I'd normally associate with a flywheel issue and is what's making me look towards mounts

Worth noting that even though the noise changed from a clunk to a vibration, it only occurs during the same criteria (1st, 2nd gear up to 40-50mph)

Deffo flywheel that

This problem has now been solved.

The original diff was fitted and the original clunking noise came back. Anyway, 2nd of Jan I had a puncture on my NSF, had both front tyres replaced and the tyre fitter brought to my attention some corrosion that had built up around the bead of the tyre, lo and behold the wheels were cleaned, new tyres fitted and the noise has all but gone. Months and months of head scratching and it turned out to be tyres all along, I still have some very minor scrubbing from the back, but I'm certain if the rear tyres are also changed this will be fixed

Who would have thought it? On the plus side, at least the car's now got a new propshaft bearing

Bonus. Cheap fix too
