Vcds Fault Code Reading Software Purchase?

Hi, I have windows 8 on my laptop. What's the best fault code reading software to purchase? If I purchase a VCDS cable off Ebay do they normally come with the required software as well or do I need to buy that as well?
I have a fault code reader that does basic tasks but am looking for something better.

Get VCDS cable officially (via NHN on here) the software is downloaded once you have registered cable.
