Tyre Puncture on an S3

Rear left has punctured with a huge nail.

Do i have to replace all 4, just two on the rear, or just the one that is punctured. What's the protocol here?

Currently have continental contisportcontact 5's.

Before this happened i had planned on getting pilot sport 4's around August....now what should i do?

Depends on how much tread is left on the others.
I would normally keep it within a couple of mm across axle.

I've used these to repair punctures many times over the years, run until the tyres wore out and never had one fail.

That’s basically how a tyre place repairs a puncture. To be honest I’d rather pay them a fiver to do it for me

If puncture repair places only charged a fiver around us I'd probably use them. You can repair a tyre on the car with the kit in less time than it takes to change the wheel.

No way would I mess about trying to repair my own tyre... think my local charges £15.00 or something. Leave that to the professionals.

OP - I'd probably change the two back tyres if you are concerned. I always tend to make sure the axles have the same tread levels or at least very very close. S3's tend to get a bit funny with different tyre tread levels/patterns I've found - I don't think there is a golden rule, but I'd imagine the 'best' tyres should be on the rear of the car as it's easier to manage understeer rather than oversteer if the situation warrant it.

If changing tyres. Go for the MPS 4 S. Have them on mine. Great tyre

Costco will repair it for £10 if you have one close to you, otherwise £15-£20 is the going rate. When I had the S3 I had a repair done on the drivers front and passengers rear and both were OK.

Short answer - yes.
Puncture repair would be fine and cheapest option.
Unless you drive on the limit, sliding sideways all over the place, I doubt you would tell any differnce if you just replaced two of the tyres.
Why not trust the decision to the spotty youths - sorry, professionals that sell and fit tyres.

Yes, you can. However for consistency of grip in the wet (dry shouldn't make as much difference unless driving on the limits) it's always better to have all 4 tyres being the same.

But as Matt says, unless it's a good independent tyre who knows their stuff, don't listen to a tyre chain. They'll just sell you what they have in stock, and tell you it's ok.

I was at a chain once (got a puncture and called in to get it repaired) and there was a women in the same situation as yourself. Tyre couldn't be repaired (that's what they told her, anyway) and they were talking about sticking a Firestone on as a replacement, when the other 3 were Michelins (tyre manufacturers made up as it was over 15 years ago).

She actually asked it an odd tyre would be ok. Yeah, no problem came the reply. Luckily he went out of the office for something, and I was able to tell the woman no to go ahead with it, and to replace like for like.

I'm sure there are loads of cars driving around with odd tyres on them. I've seen one car with all 4 tyres different. Might be fine for 95% of the time. But come that emergency stop on the motorway in the wet. You better believe you need all 4 tyres the same.

My feeling is that there should be no more than 3mm max difference between the front and rear, so unless I had more than 5mm left on the good pair then I would do all 4. I currently have 2 rear tyres in dire need of replacement, the front two are contisports and have 4mm left, which would mean that there difference between the front and the back would be 4mm. Plus I don’t want conti’s again and I wouldn’t put different tyres on the front and back. Therefore I’m changing all 4 for MPS4’s

Don’t make a puncture your pet project! Tires are serious business and deserve the attention of a specialist. A tire needs to be removed from the vehicle and dismounted from the rim in order to be inspected properly.

I don't take offence, advice is just that and there are obviously people with a vested interest that want to sell tyres.
I would not repair a tyre that has been run flat on the rim or obviously sliced but for a nail slow puncture I have no issue repairing and using until the tyre is shot. The construction of tyres with steel and nylon belting / overlays is incredibly strong and a hole easily pluggable without compromising safety - in my opinion.
I'm quite happy to run like this, if Ana wants all four tyres within a couple of mm of each other it's their choice and money.
As regards selling your old tyres - I would not fit someone else's part-worns but some seem happy to do this and that's their choice also.
