Can't find out how to do this. PFL A3 Sport Cab, no LED DRLs but the bulbed version is permanently on.

Is there any way of switching these off? Nothing in the menu on the MMI seems to do it.

So you have halogen lights correct? I think DRLs are not allowed by law to be turned off. You can however, buy Carista from Amazon and do it via their app.

I'm not entirely sure whether they are halogen or not. I assume so. Standard bulbs all round.

Weird, My 2011 Alfa had LED DRLs and you could turn them off via the menu system.

Strange. Might be a new law. But get Carista and you will be fine. There is a thread on the main A3 8v part of this forum with loss of info. Defo get Carista from Amazon as you get 1 month free trial.

... or you could check out the VCDS map, send someone close to your location a message to see if they could help you out for a few beer tokens, or maybe visit a professional, like myself, and have the option to control your daytime running lights from the MMI and more activated / tweaked :)

    Edit to add:

Factory fitted DRL are also part of a vehicles MOT in the uk.

In UK, new type approvals (ie new models introduced) after Feb 2011 had to have always on front DRLs.

I can’t figure out why you would want to turn them off. Particularly as they are a legal requirement.

There is always confusion on this subject regarding when the law specifically applies to DRL.
Yes it applies to "new models" after a certain date, but not if they were designed before this date.
An example would be the Mk.3 Focus which was first released in 2011, but only the top spec had DRL because they were not a legal requirement on this model due to having been designed before the law came into force.

Regarding the OP, I think he wants to turn them off because it is simply his sidelights that are on all the time and not dedicated LED DRL.
I had a 2002 Volvo S40 which was the same, but could be turned off via a set procedure.....which I did. :)

    Never mind.

I had a 1978 Fiat 128 estate in a fetching tomato red, so it could have been worse.

In the case of the focus it was because type approval happened before the law on drl's was introduced...

That's precisely why!!! I used to leave the Alfa's LEDs on as they look nice but having the sidelights on sadly makes me think I'm driving a Volvo 240....

Thanks for all that info. Learnt some stuff there.

In all honesty, I barely see the point. When, during normal daylight hours did you ever NOT see a car that had no DRLs? For sure there's nothing wrong with them being on, but are you going to fail to see a car that doesn't? How did we ever manage before 2011?

It's a bit like those folks who switch their fogs on at the merest sign of rain. Hey! See that car 300 metres away with normal lights on? If you can see him, you don't need rear fogs on!!

2011 I don't think so.. It started after 2013 models.. I had 2011 a3 and I could turn lights completelyoff .. Now on mine 2015 in position 0 lights are still on.. It si not uk but EU law my dear.. In my country in eu if cops will see u with the lights off during day u, will get 100 euro fine and that was implement yeearrs and yeears ago and ppl been forgetting switching them on and getting tickets all time so they complained so that's why they implemented this.. But audi started auto switches only from 2013 models

The same rule applies to all manufacturers.
I gave an example of an all new model launched after Feb 2011 but did not have DRL
Audi did not have a new A3 in 2011 so there was no legal requirement to fit DRL.
I assume that it wasn't until the 8V model was launched in 2012 that DRL was fitted as standard.

In that case the model must have had Type Approval before Feb 2011 when the law came into force. This means it would not have been a legal requirement to have always on front DRL.
However most manufacturers were starting to fit them as standard at that point whether legally obligated to do so or not. :)
