Turbo whine

Hi All

My turbo has started making the police siren noise. Its not very loud but you can hear it over engine noise etc. Noticable from startup and at tickover and while driving slowly.

Car has only done just over 46,000 miles. Its not thrashed although does get a workout when its up to temp now and then. Oil (507.00) and genuine filter changes every 5000 miles and were changed just over 1000 miles ago. Has had a remap a few months ago and done probably between 1000 and 2000 miles since then. No other running or driving issues.

Is this something to worry about? Is there something I should check or do?

I would take it to either Audi or a turbo specialist. The absolutely last thing you want to happen is a turbine bearing to fail and the impeller smash itself to bits and throw chunks of metal into your engine...

exactly what he said ^ . You really don't want to be hammering your car at all until you get that looked at / sorted.

By up to temp I hope you mean that the oil temperature (not coolant) is showing as > 80C in which case all good on that part.

one of the things a remap does is increase the turbo boost and that puts an awful lot more strain on the turbo, and they are not indestructible. There are other people on here who have had turbo failure with not a huge load of miles on their cars. Some of it just comes down to bad luck unfortunately.

I have spoken to the guy that remapped it and I have to take it in so he can have a listen.

In the event that the turbo is on its way out, is there an alternative more reliable, perhaps slightly performance enhanced replacement available. If the original is struggling with a stage one map, I would rather replace with something that will last a while.

People usually go for a Turbotechnics V3 IS38 Hybrid I think as they can handle about 460-480 comfortably
