Hi all,

For various reasons I need an automatic car but really like the S3, anyone know if it's possible to put an auto box in and if so who would be good at doing this? Would you have to get a reconditioned box, I know the A3 had 4 speed boxes and I would like 5 speed auto like in the S6, is it possible, would be very grateful for your advice and pointers as to who could do a good job.

Were there ever any automatic A3 Quattros or 4Motion Golfs/Boras? If so that's probably your only hope unless the xfer box can be bolted onto a standard A3 auto box.

Have you thought about changing the S3 for a 3.2 Quattro with the DSG box? Probably a more cost-effective way to go.

Unfortunately the 4motion range on golf and bora were manual only although they did an automatic v64motion passat i think, could that transmission fit? I prefer the S3 to the new a3 3.2 and also the 1999 S3's are selling around 10/11k with highish miles whereas those 3.2's are 20k too much money.

If it's the old Passat that had the drivetrain from the A4, completely different Quattro system to the A3 I'm afraid. So no, I doubt very much it would fit.

I think your best bet would be to talk to a specialist firm like JBS.

HTH.

Thanks for the link Im gonna contact those people.

I do like the 4.2 A6 and the S6 but hard to park at 15ft 9 long around London.

No offence, but what is the point in owning an S3 with Auto transmission? you would lose so much power through the power sapping torque converter that it would become a slow car imo. If it's the look you are after, Auto is available on the 1.8T and diesel models, and still retain the A3 profile, add a set of alloys and lower it would look pretty good. Much cheaper option than converting an S3!
