Hello all

I have had my car for around 5 years, its a 2005 A4 B7 Avant. It has a tow bar fitted with attachment so I can fit a tow ball. I have never used it to tow anything, but I now urgently need to.

However, I can't (for-the-life-of-me) see where the trailer electrics hook up, and I have looked everywhere. I am stumped. Perhaps it had the tow bar fitted but no electrics ?

The only thing I can possibly see is a white cylindrical "thing" under the rear bumper (see pic). It is really hard to reach. It has a cap which unscrews with a spring loaded action, to reveal two prongs in the cap. However, I have never seen an electrical connection like it and I am not sure if it is a connector (can't see any wires or electrical contacts). Is it a towing connector? If not, what is it? Any ideas where the electrical connector might be and how I tell if it is fitted. Any help much appreciated.

The part you have removed is just an adjustable stop which sits on the standard rear bumper reinforcer and stabilises the centre of the rear bumper.

If the electrics are fitted then they should be easy to spot so I can only assume the previous owner removed them for some reason. You could do with popping out the quarter panel trims in the boot to see if its just been tucked away.

Thank you for this. I wondered what it was. I had a good look and can see no evidence of wiring so have gone for a universal bypass relay and socket.
