Track car Build Thread

standard belts for now, time/money etc running out and its still got the standard seats fitted.

I'll get some buckets sorted and some harnesses once i'm sure its all working!

aye exactly, they were free, bolt in with minimal hassle and are slightly bolstery.

I tracked my daily a couple years back and it was fine with the standard seats and belts.

Weather and short evenings are really working against me now though :(

Yeah. It sucks now. Get back home at six and it's dark. Can't do much on the car.

Grr.

So i went out tonight and decided to try and trace down this lambda fault. Messed around and realised the ECU doesnt power the lambda unless the engine is running, so after confirming that everything looked ok, i tried to start it. Ofcourse, it wouldnt start. Listening i could heard the fuel pump sounded unhappy, so i went and got a gallon of petrol and put it in. Started fine after that! Tested the lambda heater terminals and sure enough there was a nice sound 14v present. So plugged it all back together, reset codes and started it up... And the fault went away and didnt return...

Dont like mystical codes that vanish for no reason!

Attached the seatbelt mounts too, so thats another item off the list.

Unfortunatley it was then getting dark and i was frozen, so i didnt get the headlamps wired up. Still, slow but sure progress! If i can tick one item off every night i'll have it all done in plenty of time!

Close now...

Headlights, done.
Bonnet pins, done.
Lower section of doors painted.

Breather can is fitted, waiting on some pipe to come (grr at tardy ebay vendors!) so i can finish hooking that up.
Found 40A fuses to fit normal fuse holder, so those are ordered and hopefully will turn up (again ebay!)
Fixed a few niggles like the brake light warning was coming on due to no high level brake light, so i wired it into the rear boot light to shut the dashboard up!

Alignment is booked for Friday morning.

To spice things up some more though, the clutch master cylinder on my tow car is shot. I've ordered a replacement (used, new was £160!) and i'm waiting on that arriving, really need that to turn up ASAP so i can get the ****** tow car sorted in time for friday morning. If it doesnt show, i'll have to bleed it thru and hope it holds out.

Its my birthday tomorrow, so its unlikely i'll get much done, however if the breather parts arrive in the morning i'll nip out and get those nailed together so its just the tow car thats left to sort.

Happy Birthday ;)

Got the breather clagged together yesterday. Also bled the clutch on the tow car and its working again (for now) as the replacement master cylinder hasnt bothered arriving yet.

Dropped it into the alignment place this morning, i'm hoping it all goes smoothly and they dont have any issues with it.

Missus got me a nice steering wheel for my birthday for it, Momo Jet, so i'm going to stick that on when i get it back from the alignment place. :)

Nice work and happy birthday for yesterday. Have a couple of Momo steering wheels here, if it was track only like yours I'd fit one but doing 20k a year I can't really lose the airbag.

Cheers. Alignments done.

Ended up thus:

Front Toe, 0mm
Front Camber; -2.25L, -1.75R
Rear Toe; 1mm (toe in) per side
Rear Camber; -2.5 both sides.

Front camber could be evened out, but its not far enough out to worry, and slightly more on the front left is probably a good thing anyway.

Fitted my steering wheel this afternoon too. :)

Nice one. What did you use for the gear lever extension? I was planning to do it as well.

A long M18 (or maybe M20, i cant remember) bolt and a lathe + tap&die :)

Its maybe a bit too long, not due to the reach, but due to the throw on the linkage.

Its a JHM short shift, set to "shortest", and forward/back travel is acceptable, but side to side travel is maybe a bit too much with the extension. I dont think its possible to shorten the side to side travel either? Will see how it feels, but maybe i'll have to swap it out for a shorter one.

Certainly means i shouldnt be missing any gears though :p

Well, i managed a whole two laps...

Arrived:

Brakes were terrible (rusty disks and pads not bedded in at all, so decided to go out for a few sensible laps to try to get them to start working properly...

Straight away i was getting the big red brake warning on the dash so went back into the paddock after two laps to check it out. Seemed to be low brake fluid, so i topped it up, had a squint at the calipers etc to see if there was any leaks, then set back off into the pits and onto the track...

Without clipping the bonnet pins back in....

What a knob!

@aragorn , car looking good Kev, ouch on the windscreen. were you at knockhill?

Oh Kev. Unlucky mate. I assume it wasn't the nicest moment seeing the bonnet coming your way!

Nightmare. I saw you driving through the car park just after 12. Some crazy cars there. That white twin turbo subaru was amazing.

The red and silver s4 looked pretty cool too.

Has the catch been removed in order to run the pins?

Yeh theres quite a few beasts there.

Red and Silver S4 belongs to "jockthedog" on SRS.

Yeh i took the factory catch off to save weight, and also because i'd cut all the strengthening webs out of the underside of the bonnet (to save more weight) which meant the area the catch attached to was removed.

Gutted mate! :(

I was coming down past knockhill today, been working up in Dundee. Was a bit late to visit, but saw a fair few trailers pulling nice cars about!

Aww mate, that's ****. Had a bonnet round the windscreen and it's not funny. This is why my Escort has pins on it, after it happened any speed above 40 and I was staring at the bonnet edge rather than the road.

All you can do is chalk this one down to experience
