i went in thinking i wanted rear wheel bearings and inner cv boot fitted and steering wheel straightened,
and came out needing 4 new tires and 1 steering rack, i just dont't get it lol.
the back tire s have become square in shape and the guy said there is not enough weight on the back wheels and cheap tires, 100 a peach isn't cheap in my eyes. Its like somebody has gone over the tires with beltsander lo.
the steering rack with the steer wheel locked so it can not move yet the wheels move at most 1cm each way, this is why when i let go of steering wheel i go to the curb
he then said its gonna cost 1600 euro's for 2 tires and a rack if bought new, is this true, im at work in the day so cannot ring round or enquire any where about it.
p&*^&U^&ed off to the max the ''specalist '' in stoke -on-trent who did my tracking want shooting i will post the geometry report tomoro to see if anyone can link the damage to been tracked very badly.
thanks for any response.
regards

sounds like he's trying to have your pants down!?
lol i would agree but you want see my tires they just ****** i will post pics tomorro in the day as you can see it very bad and feel it whilst driving makes you sea sick and at certain speeds and corners which is why i thought i needed wheel bearings, the steering rack when he was turning the wheels by hand left to right i saw the play in the rack it was quite a lot and clicky type noise do you know how many hours labour it is to fit a steering rack? i think i read on here the engine has to come out not too sure thou. regards

Did you not notice your tyres before it went in?! I know everytime I get in/out my car I look at my wheels/tyres and body work for scratches, maybe not both sides depending on how I've parked etc

no i didn't notice it as it s the back passenger side is worse i thought it was wheel bearings because of the noises thats why i went in. And when i saw the tires it just confused me i've never seen it before ever
regards

Can't really see much tbh, on the 4th picture, it looks like a flat spot or is it the light?

some tyres just wear like that inc bridgestones!

p.s they would cause a right racket too

they do indeed make a racket, its getting worse by the milei'd say you can see it best on the first pic when zoomed in,
and also the 4th picture if zoom in to the wheel in the background ,
my quote to get me car sorted is now at just under 1000 euro's with tyres .
I will all be fixed up by friday . then it no doubt will start all over again

mikemc yes they are flat spots all the way round the tyres on the wear indicator in most places but not on the outside, the tyres are no longer round very mad indeed.
i might try nokian tyres next or go back to continentals
regards

Before you do anything check the depths of your front tyres. If the rears are more worn than the front this will be something to do with the quattro system. I have ran conti tyres since i've owned the car & everytime i have replaced the front tyres i get a whining noise its sounds like the haldex is ****ed. Anyway i discovered that switching the tyres round cures the noise....i almost replaced the haldex before that.

On Quattro cars isn't it important to keep front and rear similar tread depths? Regarding uneven random flat spots, that's usually a sign of worn suspension although ive never seen anything that bad! Are the tires remoulded?

Sound man thanks for the info, the fronts are ok 2- 3 mm above the wear blocks , but the back wheels are at certain points under the wear indicator and other points they are the same as the front,
they were all wearing the same since new up until now

i hope my diff isn't on the way out, i was turning the wheel off the ground earlier and they turn smoothly but seems to stop as soon as let go i didn't turn them hard as my jack wanted go for a walk :) ..
also lost my locking wheel nut at xmas due to leaving it on the nut , so am unable to change them round . i think its too late to swap them round they have destroyed the audi build quality. i hope when i fit new tyres the car is silent but very much doubt it
how much would i get if i broke the car up? , i've had enough of the constant c**p it gives me
regards
lost it........

new tyre mate not remolded as far as i know, they were manufacture in summer 2012 it says on the sidewall.
i had new springs fitted just over a year ago the shocks seem to be ok , but i'm replacing them on friday along with the tyres and a few other things
regards.

Try a new set of tyres first before you throw any more cash at it, or break it up!

My old A3 TDI quattro had similar problems with odd wear on v groove tyres, sounded like the wheel bearing going and all sorts. New tyres and it was quiet again.

Re your diff, it's mechanically connected to the driveshafts and the wheel, so I'm not surprised the wheel stopped quickly when you spun it. There is a certain amount of mechanical resistance which will stop the wheel quickly.

Dont worry about tread differences front to rear or even side to side on a Haldex quattro, they're designed to allow for tread depth differences. Your handbook will reveal all.

sound mate, yea all the noises it makes sound like bearing issues, sounds like a 'sierra' with f**ked diff its that loud in the cabin, i wonder if its that loud outside
i thought it messes the ecu head up when all tyres are diff depths?
i have to throw cash at it , its costing a small fortune to keep running, i need hire a fuel tanker to follow me around lol, i cannot afford to fix it and fuel it up until friday . i expect a huge bill on friday so will have to live at work or something. eating bread and water for the next few months.
regards.

Dose it sound really loud at about 40? Mine did and it was out of shape tyres on the rear (sounded like bearings) ...wouldn't hurt to put a descent make on tho.....only thing holding you to the road at the end of the day....just my 10pence.

at all speeds now mate i dont drive over 65 mph due to noise an vibration and,
The police threatened me here in Holland they have been hounding me since xmas i think just cus i have a 13 yr old audi i get a police escort most of the time for some reason or other .
when i jacked it up earlier and rolled the tyres round i could'nt work out what shape the tyre has become lol
And yea you got it in one buy decent make next time :)
thanks for all your replys an advise its quality.

if anyones interested i got vredestein ultrac vorti r tyres fitted as audi wanted 246 euros per tyre for conti's or something else i can't remeber what they were. These i got come to just under 250 euros for 2, the car feels planted compared to what were on but i don't no how long they will last .Audi also wanted 146 euro's to fit inner cv boot and upto half a day labour to find a vacuum leak i nearly collapsed
anyone else got these tyres fitted should i take em back .
regards.

also they said the steering rack can be fixed rather than replaced? would it still be cheaper fitting a refurb .thanks
