To Remap or not to Remap

Wife's S3 sportback arriving in a week or so. Should we remap or not?

Difficult one for me as it is her car BUT she loves her cars and fast ones but...

I have previously owned two 8P S3s and both were stage 2+ tuned...

I know a bit stupid as the car hasnt even arrived yet

You take your chances when you remap and if you lose you accept the consequences. I guess it comes down to how risk averse you are and I tend to be if I'm honest and have come undone on at least one occasion (Impreza P1 bottom end which cost me £5k)...

It is an S-Tronic yes...Are they prone to problems when tuned?

If a cars going to go wrong it'll probably go wrong in the first 3-6 months of ownership. If the s-tronic goes pop and Audi throw up a TD1 code then you're looking at 6k to replace it. Not a risk I'd take buddy. I'd be happy with its current power.

Being remapped For 8 months Now. No issues with the gearbox. This is a revised dq200, better...

Next year when my warranty expires ill be looking at ABT , Despite being expensive ill get an extra 2yr warranty for peice of mind has to be worth it.

Off topic slightly but you can buy your Audi TTS with a ABT remap and body kit.

At the end of the day you have got 300bhp stock and a 0-60 time of under 5 seconds....isn't that fast enough? Whilst keeping your FULL warranty!!!

I've concluded that if I were to ever remap, I'd do it outside of warranty and would only go for a big, well-known remappers - i.e. REVO.

Definitely wouldn't use the "Re-Map specialist" I found in the back of my local paper.

I'm curious over what re-map the guy who had the over fuelling issues used...

I think the overfueling was caused by the turbo being blown and not the map

I certainly wouldn't use anyone old company you find facebook etc. I have used a local VAG specialist for a remap on the S3 8P and had no issues over 35k miles.

With the testing Revo put into a map it certainly is a wise choice.

At the end of the day, it's your car (it needs to be! Don't do it on a leased vehicle or one on HP) and consequently your choice but do it with your eyes open and be prepared to suffer any consequences.


Or like some one suggested buy an RS3, could be cheaper?

Because it isn't yours and making unapproved changes, particularly ones which affect the value of the vehicle (no warranty) will be really frowned on.............

For "frowned upon", read VW finance will immediately demand payment for the car 'in full', or will repossess it (at your expense), fix it back to stock (at your expense), flog it off cheap (at your expense), and come after you for anything still outstanding.

Here's an interesting thread from a few years ago that gives an example of the sort of thing that can happen;

This morning, Seat UK formally confirmed that the car's warranty on the ECU and Engine is void. They are not prepared to investigate the matter any further, believeing the REVO code, and that alone is the cause of the ECU's inability to communicate with the rest of the car, and VAGCOM. Furthermore, they have cancelled the breakdown assistance for the vehicle too, as it has been substantially altered outside of the original spec. They said that any further breakdown on the car is highly unlikley going to be atributed to the OE hardware in the car, and is due to the engine running outside of the recommended spec.

The vehice is under a contracted finance agreement also, and they also believe I have broken the terms of that contract, and have demanded payment in full within 28 days for the outstanding balance, or the goods returned to them in original condition (fair wear and tear excluded). I have asked for written proof of this by Friday.

They have also cancelled and taken back the hire car.

The guys at VagTech were present when this was all being discussed with the suited chap from Seat who was there this afternoon, and explained to him how none of the cars electricts ect were touched, but the person from Seat wasn't bothered. While he was there, they built a test bench with the aid of Carl from REVO to see if ECU info can be pulled up from it when it is removed from the vehicle.

As he expected, when the ECU is taken out the car, it did function correctly. This would lead to a wireing fault, but he said it's a needle in a haystack situation. And they also confirmed that no wires were touched during the IC installation. Seat still refuse to believe this.

Despite the fact that there is no longer a warrenty on this 9 month old car, Seat have instructed VagTech to stop carrying out work on the ECU, as it's their property! A few choice words from myself and the guys at VagTech were exchanged, then the Seat person left.

The instruction was then given to strip ALL modifications from the vehicle.

Pretty simple then:

i. Take a risk, remap the car and HOPE nothing goes wrong during the warranty period.

ii. Leave the car stock and be happy .

iii. Buy an RS3 instead.

I guess I been both lucky and naive in the past but hey ho, life is a journey!
