So I bought a car the other day after saving up about 7 years to be able to buy an Audi A6 2013 TDI 2.0 Sline on 85k, I have only just managed to get insured on it and give it a good run today and I noticed when going up a hill while the engine was around 70c it was slipping gear and skipping the wheels like the gearbox had an issue.

Once the engine warmed up and went up another hill and it seemed fine.

I'm guessing the gearbox is on its way out and just hoping it will last until I can sell it off as I have no money left to repair it. like I say the car drives fine once it's warm and drives beautifully actually.

one other weird thing is that the EML doesn't come on, at all... either it's been mapped out or maybe it's not common?

the guy I bought it off has now blocked me and I've later found out used a fake profile on Facebook..... feel like I've been scammed. I obviously can't take the car back and not sure if i can do anything legally about it.

Any ideas on what I should do? I was thinking take AA insurance out for the gearbox and maybe taking it to a gearbox specialist to have a look?

Has anyone had similar issues?

Many thanks guys :(

Have you driven a CVT before? And understand it doesn't shift gears like a traditional box?
Puts fear in alot of people if you're not familiar with its weirdness.

No I'm used to a manual and this is my first automatic out of the 5 previous cars I've owned.

I didn't put the foot down while going uphill it literally just started juddering and wheel banging like the wheels were going to fall off

If in doubt, get it checked out comes to mind.

I'd be getting it inspected by a competent mechanic to ensure all is correct.

And get the car scanned for faults with vcds or similar.

I know a really good gearbox guy who only does gearboxes. I want to take it to him to check out but I've got no time to do so really with work as he's open during my working hours and i have no holidays left. I'm going to have to wait until I got a free week off inbetween jobs mid april and hope it lasts till then and won't be getting the AA home with a 4k gearbox rebuild bill that I can't afford

Any idea when is was last serviced? I've sure CVT boxes should be done every 35-40K miles, so that car should have had at least 2 services.

It's been to audi till 60k and I don't think they do them even though I know they should. After buying car and it driving perfectly fine if not great warm... my first plan was to get the gearbox oil done as there was no proof. Just proof of general services

Edit: also tried to contact audi to see if they have ever done it but nothing back yet and I don't have the v5 yet to prove its mine either to them

It may never have been done and could be causing the issue, it would be the first thing I would look at.

As Above really but if you really need to drive it, just take it easy but ideally don't use it until you have a more in-depth diagnosis of the car.
Maybe worth putting out a shout for a local member to you with vcds or vag-com as it was formally known and see if they can do a scan for you at home.
It may not show anything but I bet it will, whats to lose just a drink or something to a willing member with vcds.

It wont solve your problem directly but it may shed light on it and /or other possible issues.

Really good idea. Where's the best section to post the request?

I've never had any first-hand experience of CVT, I just like a proper gearbox but this article may be of interest, ignore its a beemer link as the article is CVT and audi fitment issues etc.

Yeah mate I saw that before making this thread when I was hecticly googling. I notice it didn't mention anything to do with cold issues and hills though, or maybe I missed that?

CVT is one of those things that to diagnose a fault properly you need to get it checked by someone thats knows his stuff, but a vcds scan will allways be a good thing. as it will give you a better overall idea on things the cvt included.

You'll find General chat is viewed a lot daily, it's not the best place to ask for vcds help but it may return quicker replies.

also worth starting on the vcds map and narrowing it down to someone close to you.

Keep in mind that map won't show all members with vcds software that are on the forum , just those that have been added hence why I mentioned adding a call out for someone that maybe right on your doorstep.

Best of luck chap , hope you get it sorted out in your favour. :icon thumright:

Also here , much better info.

Looking like I really need to get it to the gearbox guy. He said between 280 to 320 for a oil change depending if it needs the filter.

Sounds like a lot but at least if it revolves the issue I'll be able to sell it.

Either way I want to get rid of the car I just have a general bad feeling about it now and will get a cheap run around instead. Probably a 2012 plate golf or something much cheaper 6 speed tdi manual

I think the guy knew it had a box issue due to his social networking actions.

So its the multitronic box, which unfortunately were named chocolate boxes, however dont be scared by this as it may just need a good service & the seller wasn't up on Audi's.

I'll never buy a car with anything other than manual, no matter how much people praise them they always seem to cost the earth at some point!

I've had 2 dsg cars & not 1 issue with them tbh, I'll never go back to manual, the future will remove manual cars anyway, why would I ever want to sit there pressing clutch hundreds of times a day, changing gears, its an absolute pointless waste of energy, time, stress, its not healthy tbh in number of ways & paddle shift is sooooo much easier & almost seamless.

Yeah but I'm old and like to change gear lol! T
To be fair though I live out in the sticks so not a big deal for me, now if I lived in the city I'd probably be converted pretty quick. I suppose the best thing to do is take out an extended warranty on a modern car with anything like a dsg/multitronic/tiptronic/fliptronic/megatronic gearbox
