Is it me or has the work place dramatically changed the last year or so? Has Covid-19 made people go mad?

So I started a new job the start of May and I feel my line manager is a bit of a liability. So my second week he went awol for a week and then returned saying his kid was really sick in hospital, so ok fair enough. This week again he’s a no show and won’t answer his phone or texts? Everyone has the hump as he is the only sales person and I’ve been dumped in the deep end and hardly had any training. I’m not too fussed as the pay is good and I’m not working to hard yet but last week my manager told a customer to F off and then had a screaming row with another manager over nothing. I’m no saint but I’m thinking dude you’re on good money working for a firm that seems to have more benefits than most plus you have a mortgage and kids so pull your finger out.

Company I worked for before half of them a nightmare!!! We didn’t get paid well but end of the day we had a job to do. People storming out saying I’ve had enough, one person kept going off sick and turned out on one of those occasions she went to Spain .

Even a friend of mine had a great career but last 3 years has turned into a waster. Not paying the mortgage, got sacked and can’t be bothered to work or talk with his kids. Has no answer why he is now like this.

Most of us hate work but we have to do it. Many a time I’ve wanted to stab someone in the eye with a biro but a little voice in my head says no you have to pay for. I swear 20 years ago this type of behaviour was not tolerated

Unfortunately after a couple of years of Covid19 uncertainty and change, Mental health issues have raised their ugly head with peoples ways of coping.

all sounds very familiar, I believe this is the way our world is going now.....

I would say that you don’t potentially really know their situation at home and they could be using work as a venting space as unprofessional as it is, it could be their only escape.

I have just taken a 6 month sabbatical due to mental health reasons over the last year work has been crazy and just loaded more and more without additional support, I’m lucky enough to be in a position where I can afford to do it as not many can. They are supporting me through it now having been with them for 7 years they have realised I am an asset to the company as the choice was either let me have it or I leave with immediate effect.

Sorry to say but most of it has been created by covid, an awful lot of people have got used to nearly 2 years off with pay an they don't like it now they have to go back into the thick of it. Couple that with an even more "entitled thinking" population and there's your result, lots of people want it, think they should have it, but they don't want to work for it. Can't be doing with it personally next time just tell them how it is whether they like it or not, me me me seems to be the general order of things nowadays!

I think that’s a very narrow minded way of thinking, you don’t know anyways personal circumstances behind why they possibly are like it.

For me I had no furlough, worked all the way through. If anything I worked more during the covid season.

I too worked all the way through covid, I was fortunate enough to not only work in a completely new sector but also keep my business ticking along in the background.
As for being narrow minded I don't think so but that is just my personal opinion, as for knowing whats going on in the background well personally I don't think whatever is going on gives an individual the right to either act in an unreasonable way towards others or not pull their weight as part of a team (which seems to have been the point of this thread) if one is having a bad time to the point that they can't cope then by all means get signed off, get help and get better, but don't come into work losing it with work colleagues or customers and don't let others down by going MIA and becoming unreliable...

I think there’s a couple of things going on here that kinda needs looked at in isolation.
firstly covid, lots of people recovering, mentally , physically etc and I have a lot of sympathy and patience for this.
secondly there are those who are taking advantage of rules and laws and taking days off here and there and bringing childcare into it knowing they can’t get sacked as long as they play within these rules. A lot just playing the system.
thirdly, these are the lazy ones and mainly younger generation. A good example of this is my mate had a apprentice/YTS type boy sent from the job centre to his factory. This boy lasted 2 days and got signed off by his doctor for ‘change shock’. His change was playing his PlayStation all day to actual hard graft.
Reason was he left school and it’s his first job, no qualification etc, and having to graft. He ended up resigning saying it’s too much hard work so went back on benefits.
lastly. There’s seems to be an overkill of psychological syndromes/disorders etc and it gets played too much. Everything can be related to some psychological issue and really boils down to some lazy *** needing to pull their finger out and get on with it. I get that some have ‘real’ issues and needs help but a lot again is playing the system.
I remember one of my first jobs after uni thinking I graduated and I know my sh1t. I was packing dirty boxes in an attic and basement and loading crap in van for archiving. I got dirty and tired and ready to leave after a week. When I spoke to the senior partner he said just get on with it and suck it up. We all have to pay our dues before getting the cushy jobs and there’s no shortcuts. It kinda stuck and I worked my *** off to get out of there. This was paying like £4-5 an hour. Nowadays folk won’t get out of bed for less than £10/h and even then they turn it down cause they could get money for doing nothing on benefits.
Anyway rant over. Probably missed a few things.

That's about the long and short of it lol!

Well it’s been an interesting few months at work and I’ve never experienced anything like this since leaving school but today was really bad and I’m still in shock.

Couple months ago one of the delivery drivers (a woman) accused her line manager of hitting her. Proved to her eventually using cctv he didn’t hit her. She’s kicked off about it and said the manager has edited the footage etc. Anyway some how she kept her job and her manager handed in his notice due to the way he’s been treated which has been awful.

We’ve had a couple more leave the last few weeks and our branch is one of the worst performing the country

But today has made me think it’s time to move on. 2 people from head office came down and pulled me into an private meeting. I’m thinking it’s this driver making claims of harassment and she’s made a few last month. Nope someone has been faking customer returns and taking cash which has been signed out with my name. The way it’s been done they think it’s not me but wanted to know how I handle cash and returned stock. A few grand is missing *** and it’s been going on since aug.

Wtf is wrong with people

There is no straightforward answer.
A lot of it is down to our whole work culture now along with accountability or lack of it.
The younger generation don't think they have to work hard, that said many do and that's good, but a lot don't and want everything handed to them on a plate.
In a way, I think the covid outbreak has highlighted a lot of shortfalls in our society, at work and socially, it's magnified problems that have been simmering away for years.
People do strange things for good or bad reasons, that's human behavior full stop and wether we like it or not it will never change, we just have to manage somehow.

Been a stressful day and a couple people asked me why I was called into a meeting with people from head office. I said I couldn’t say but it seems like everyone knew apart from me someone had been stealing but they didn’t know I’ve been setup. I spoke to HR asking wtf is going on but they had no record of it, so then I’m in panic mode. Luckily this manager on get on with gave me a number of someone very high up in the firm as I’m told the person we all think is thieving is back to work tomorrow. I told him how can I work with this person knowing they’ve tried to set me up. He was really good and said don’t worry I know all about it and he’s 99% sure the thief ain’t turning up but if they do people at the top are making a surprise visit tomorrow and don’t worry people are being sacked. He said it’s a lot worse than I think at the branch but me and a few others have been working hard and we will be looked after so don’t worry and please don’t leave the company.

Will wait and see. I don’t have a scooby who else is involved. It’s like ****** eastenders

Two things to remember………
You are totally innocent and have a clear conscience.
The upper management are behind you with their support.

Provided they deal with it properly and remove the bad apple(s) hopefully things start improving for you and it becomes a better place to work again.

I'd be a bit wary of people repeatedly telling me not to worry......just saying.
Best of luck, hope it works out for you.

Pace of life seems to speed up every year? Some people find it all too stressful.

Find a job you love and never have to work a day in your life.

So I turned up to work and the thief was there. Straight away I said to the branch manager in his office wtf how can I work here with him working next to me. I was told to stay cool and be patient.

20 mins later the 2 that interviewed me the other day appeared and called him into an office. 1 hour later one of them comes out and clears his desk then a couple of us see him escorted out the back door to his car. I then get called in and was told don’t panic I’m 100% clear but don’t talk to him or tell anyone a thing until further notice.

We’ve been told in a team meeting that he’s taking time away from the business but the people I told looked at me to say he ain’t coming back. Just glad it’s more or less over, and still shocked this guy set me up

Just be careful chap as you have inadvertently posted the case across a massive audience which may cause possible problems, unlikely but something to keep in mind.
Good news on the outcome for you

Dont think the OP has to worry unless any of his work colleagues are a) audi drivers and b) frequent this forum :) Doubtful

Agreed but you’d be surprised who reads websites posting and info and then it can come back and bite you on the backside.
