OK - start by saying the car is great

now...

THE GOOD....
I bought my 2006 car from a car dealer in Preston - I thought the brakes were not great; but they sent them to an independent garage who said they were A OK...got it home and I still wasn't sure so went to a local audi specialist plus a kwik fit, who both said the front discs and rear pads were poor....surprisingly the dealer immediately ordered new front and back discs and pads...all credit to them...expected a fight, but great service instead...

THE BAD
booked my car into my local audi garage to have the 3.2 software update done (8088 in my case)...the garage continually failed to return calls, and I had to tell them the details of the software update (thanks Julian) 3 times including emails; and tell them the car was due for the coilpack recall...
guess what...when they phoned to say my car was ready, they had not done the software update as they said it didnt exist, . they said they would chase up and contact me back...but sure enough; no phone call...

THE FUGLY
I had new tyres on the car..when kwik fit looked at it, they instantly pointed out that my rears were "on the wrong way around" for the tread...

so Kwik fit, who normally get bad press were good; as was the supplying car dealer and the audi recall as i got new coilpacks...

Audi XXXXXXX were shocking call support and service...

and the tyre fitting place need to be shot at dawn if they dont know which way to put on tyres!!!?


Anyway, I will go to Audi Stafford from now on, as they get good reviews...

no actually the tyre has inside and outside rim...the tyre even says it on them...and they had been put on the wheels the wrong way around...not just swapping tyre...same tyre on same wheel...but ensuring it has arrows pointing correct way - and kwik fit did it for free!

Paddy - I gave them all of that detail....and they still "couldnt find anything for a DSG; only for a manual"???

Guy's I too have a 06 3.2 how do I know if it needs the software update? What are the benifits of the software update. Do please excuse my ignorance!

OK, here we go
Over a period of time the 3.2 both manual and DSG developed a misfire, mine is dsg and started at about 40k miles. there is no fault code nor engine light but its pretty obvious to spot.
With the car in neutral, warm and on tick over try to gently ease the revs up to exactly 2k. If the problem has started on your engine you will find the rev counter needle starts to bounce either side of 2k revs and holding the needle steady on 2k is imposable. you will also hear a slight popping and misfire.
This is a widely recognised fault with this engine and the software update addresses the mixture ( which is rich at this point). Unfortunately Audi GB did not seem to except there was a problem and it was Audi Germany that issued the fix. Therefore the fix is available but it doesn't show up on the UK dealers computer as a recognised fix, however it is in the system and takes 30 mins to apply.l I kicked up a fuss with Audi GB and got the whole thing done for free .
If you dont have the problem now then make a note of the fix details because you might well need them in the future.

Audi are playing the plonker on this. I had mine done at Guildford Audi after a long meeting with the service manager and three visits during which time they said that the misfire was a characteristic of the engine....Once fixed it was excellent with super smooth running and improved fuel consumption but another guy on here went to get his done 5 days later at Guildford and the same service manager denied they had ever done the job or that fix even existed.
SO be prepared to fight

This is the message found by 3.2Ju on a german forum so the english is a bit brokenm but you get the jist...the bit at the end refers to possible damage to the Lambda probes in the exhaust but that will show as an engine light fault if its a problem. You may need someone with VCDS to tell you your engine number and ECU controller part number referred to bellow.


Software update of the controller (Motronic) of the VR6 3.2-Liter engine

over an update the control software some well-known smaller lack are repaired such as Motorruckeln, jerky no-load operation, power loss within the final range etc..
AUDI puts this software to its workshops at the disposal.

Many forum members had themselves already up-played the update with success. They report throughout nearly all of better fuel intake with accelerating, to more force development in the passage, better sound (more full of seeds and deep sonor), as well as being omitted the power loss.

We do not have the descriptive problem fortunately, but there is firmware and/or software update in such a way für's the engine expensive equipment! And additionally also still the Lambdasonde is preserved (of it to hammer believe I two!).



Edit: that is the procedure number and the text with a BMJ engine - in a general manner engine might be the same text, perhaps even the same procedure number with the BDB.

It is a fault with all engines but later cars have the update factory fitted so its really a case of if your car has its engine number code listed in the post i put up earlier then it will probably fault . I would leave well alone if you dont have a problem but rest assured if a problem develops that a fix is available

Mine had 60k on it and got the hesitation. I had to fight to get mine done. My local Dealership tried constantly fobbing me off even with all the information above given to them. I contacted Audi UK, and withing 2 days it was sorted free of charge but partly due to the treatment to me by the local dealership over this!

Push your dealerships, they will get it done. Sadly this update is an old update apparently and because of this doesn't show up on their computers, so the guy at Audi UK explained to me. Older updates fall off the screens apparently! But if they dont have it the above mentioned CD (the updates CD No. 4F0 906,961 N ) will sort it.

This brings back the memories of searching for the cure and all those dead end "fixes" we tried lol (check out the link in my sig), all good now though!
Just to reiterate what Paddy said, it's easiest to spot when stationary at 2k rpm, but it does manifest itself on the road at light throttle with the car "jerking slightly. If you need the update, then make sure you pursue it as it is worth it.

It's easy to spot because the car doesn't accelerate smoothly! FWIW i had to cough up £100 to have it done about 3 weeks after i bought the car privately - well worth it though

A quick thread hijack while so many knowledgable 3.2 owners are in the same place.......

Just to check I'm reading the tyre pressure chart correctly, have I got it right that for a 3.2 SB on 18" wheels the inflation pressure is 44 PSI all round?

Checked mine for the first time since picking the car up today. Now fully inflated. Am expecting MPG to increase to mid 50s ;-)

I've just checked again and mine gives 4 potential pressures. 3 of these are for 17" wheels with varying loads. The other is for the 18" and gives 44psi all round. I agree it seems high though.

I don't get the hesitation so much at stationary as I do on light hesitation, but I've exhausted most other solutions now, so the update is a must...

Ps coilpack response - just contact your local dealer, and they can check your reg on system to see if it's due a recall...

I believe that this update is available to the Audi network as an ECU firmware update.

There is also a CD available with this firmware on it – ref 4FO 906,961 N

There won’t be any error codes showing on the ECU however, the firmware will be out of date as this was released in December ‘09

hi am havein this problem with audi fixin my car doin the ecu update av been on fone to audi uk who are just trying to fob me off sayin take the car to audi dealership an book the car in for the coilpack recall as am tryin to tell them its not the coil packs the car drives fine if you put your foot down its when you try an drive at 2k rpm the car jumps an missfires and as av read this thread basically its just the update which needs doin now i try an explain to audi what i need doin they rnt aware of this update av give them the codes which are on this thread an still have no idea what am talkin about av seen 1 person went to guillford audi and had a word with the service manger now av spoke to that same manager and all i get of him is get me a reg of a car which has had the update done thats the only way he will no what am talkin about MADNESSS can any 1 help me out thanks

As a fellow 3.2 owner, i'll add my own experiences.

My coil pack recall was flagged up by Audi without being asked on a long life service last month.

I never worried about the software update as I read it only affected pre-06 models.

Although I do find the acceleration a little jerky (prob the DSG box), I have no problem holding the revs at 2000rpm

When I went to get my ECU update done as already said I had issues too with the dealership not wanting to know. I even explained about members off here and the dealerships they used that did the update. They still didnt want to know....nice! In the end I went through Audi UK so dont give up. It is well worth it as mines so smooth now.

I've never had the coil pack recall as mine failed late last year so had to stump up to have them all changed myself...some you win, some you loose.
