Just wondering if anyone has any experience, thoughts on this?

I have a manual TDI Quattro, I love my car and its exactly the car I want. However due to illness, I am potentially looking at having to change to an auto, yet as know they don't make a quattro DSG, I am in a bit of a dilemma.

I have read the thread for the lad who changed his S3 to DSG with paddles etc, but was wondering if anyone has done the TDI conversion?

I dont need flappy paddles (although would be nice, but to keep costs down I would avoid them), and obviously would have my box to be able to sell to contribute to the costs.

I wouldnt be able to do this myself, so would be looking at a specialist to do it, I have read Storm Developments have done these types of conversions, so I will be giving them a shout this week to see what the possibility of it is.

However I imagine the only TDI box is a non 4wd one, and would the S3 box ratios not work?

Just really wondering what the possibiities potential costs are, bit of discussion really from those with more knowledge than me.. before I have to give in and look to buying an auto 2wd'er. I hate 2wd cars, they just feel so flimsy :)

personally i wouldn't bother because as you say, they never made a haldex diesel auto.

s3 box wouldn't work due to the ratios.

you may run into issues with the dvla, insurance etc as you've built something that wasn't meant to be built.

time/cost etc would be extreme.

I seriously beg to differ with "I hate 2wd cars, they just feel so flimsy" since your car is 2wd such a large portion of the time.

Anyway, the ratios wouldn't work from a S3 box, I think for the amount of time/money this would take, it would be easier to sell and buy a DSG model.

The 8V is quattro and DSG though, that may be something to look at...

I am used to driving modified cars, so do realise the insurance and DVLA ..My Mk2 Golf had a BAM S3 engine with Emerald management, which I built myself, so used to the requirements of registering modified cars.

In terms of money, if I was working in a 2-3 grand area, this is something I would be happy at spending. I know I can sell and buy a 2wd DSG, but this is something I want to avoid , if i can, plus I always like to modify things :)

Being that I drove 2wd most of my life, then went to a Subaru, i will never go back to 2wd, yes the haldex is off alot of time, but thats fine, its there when its needed.

I have looked at the 8V Quattro TDI, but the prices of them is still quite steep...plus I dont actually like them.

This isnt more about 'bothering', its more about practicality and cost really. I dont know much about the 8P quattro box, and unsure if it is actually possible, first off, so thats really what I fancied chatting about.

I didn't mean buy the 8V I meant have a look at the possibility of using that box because that car is quattro and DSG...

its a completely different platform so won't work.

Oh yes, thats a good point. But I imagine those boxes will still be horrifically expense when they come up. But definitely something to have a research about.

Yup, I didn't think of the cost to be honest...I guess if someone is unlucky and stuffs their in a lamp post you may get lucky lol :)

Its true, thats how I ended up with my S3 engine, saw it wrapped around a lamp post, left a note on the car...the idiot wasnt insured so sold the car off cheap. £300 for a 34K BAM engine , ECU, wiring and a whole host of other goodies. :)

May be worth having a look if they ever made a mk5 golf tdi 4motion with DSG over in the continent. They usually get some more exotic options that over here!

there never was a 1k platform dsg diesel haldex plus all the 1k diesels were pd, not common rail like yours.
