Hi

My A3 (2000 1.9TDI 110ps - NOT PD) is suffering power loss and has fault code 17964. VCDS says the following:

Possible Symptoms

  • Reduced power output
  • Limp mode
Possible Causes

  • Boost Pressure too Low
  • Hoses/Pipes incorrect connected, disconnected or leaking
  • Charger Pressure Control defective
    • VNT (variable nozzle turbo): nozzles stuck
  • Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75) defective
Possible Solutions

  • Check Hoses/Pipes to/between Components
  • Check Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75)
  • Check / Clean / Replace Charge Pressure Control
    • Check / Clean mechanism for variable nozzles
-----------------------
I'm just looking for a bit of advice on where to start. The symptons are-

On start-up, car feels ok on power (but not as good as it used to), then after about a few minutes driving, once you get up to 2400revs/60-70mph, you'll feel a slight stutter and then it feels like the engine is strangled and there's no power on acceleration. I've tried unplugging the MAF but it makes no differance.

What I was thinking is that it's a leak somewhere in the turbo system - and the stutter is when pressure is lost? I'm going to start by checking/replacing all the small, rubber turbo pipes for splits etc and replace, clean the EGR valve, but not really sure where to go next. I don't think it is the turbo vanes sticking open, as I had this before and the result was overboost and then limp mode (plus it only happened when the engine was up to normal operating temp).

I have also read it can be the turbo actuator...?

So just wanting some pointers on what to do next!

Start by looking for a boost leak. I got loads on my old 110 tdi golf. If its just a split, it will feel like its running out of 'puff'.

It does feel like it runs out of puff!

What/how do I check for a boost leak?
