tailgate electrics question

Regarding tailgate lowering from door switch or key,
Basically having a look at friends recently purchased car and wondering if he needs to purchase a tailgate module for this function? as seen available from kufatec / carat garage / bexpro and probably others.
i have had a little play about with obd eleven to no joy along the lines of "function not available" but have been successful with mirror dip , scandinavian drl and race mode in drive select, reset service counters etc etc. really only leaving the tailgate as the last desired personal touch!

i have successfuly coded mine and another few a7 and a6 tailgates to do this but is this a ( lesser firmware ?) tailgate module unit only writeable for opening ?

Yes you need the module, cannot be coded.

I haven't used this but there is a write up over on RS246.
