I had a remap done last weekend and the technician said afterwards that he didn't push it too far as he could see that the flywheel was showing signs of failure (slight knock?).

Anyway, I've only just paid £1k on having a new turbo fitted so I'm not exactly flush right now. Although I don't want the flywheel to fail and take out my gearbox (they said that this could happen).

I can't see or hear anything wrong though. I'm not doubting their advice but would still be interested to know what signs would you normally look for when your flywheel is about to fail or on it's way out?

I'm just wondering how much time I have before this needs to be sorted out.

It's a DSG gearbox.

Cheers :)

Usually you would hear a slight knock/rattle from it and then as it gets worse you feel a vibration on the clutch pedal. Just be very gentle with it until you're feeling flush enough to get a new clutch and flywheel fitted. Don't be booting it on everywhere and gently apply throttle if you need to.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I should of said that I have a DSG gearbox, so no chance of feeling anything through a clutch peddle. I can't say that I've noticed any significant knocking or rattling either - would the symptoms be different for the DSG box?

Cheers

Awk right enough it says in your sig its a 2.0 TDI DSG lol.

Yeah the rattling/knocking symptoms would be similar but that's about it. Should last long enough if your drive it smoothly mate

Can't say I've heard any rattles TBH, however I've never listened for any.

I will have a proper check tonight to hear anything.

If I can't hear any rattles, would there be anything to look out for?

It's not something you can visually check for really unless you pull the box out and test how much movement the flywheel has.

And if you've done that your're probably best replacing you clutch and flywheel whilst you're there cause it's quite a job to get a gearbox out and back in again.

Put the car in N at idle and you should hear some the sounds. If you can't then don't worry about it...if you can, I still wouldn't worry about it. Let it get worse and in the mean time save some pennies for it?

I think LUK flywheels (OEM quality) are around £300 at Euro Car Parts so it call be all in for up to £500.

As above, you'll hear a knocking/rattle when in N or P. This will disappear when you pop it into 'D' with your foot pressed on the brake.

Drove mine for about 2 months after first hearing the sound with no loss of performance, and the progression of symptoms either before getting it replaced.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I checked last night from cold with it in P and could not hear any rattles at all.

Did not try in N though, so will check that later too and will report back.

The technician reported this while he was doing a remap, so he definitely didn't find the issue by pulling the box out.

Quick update... spoke to the technician who worked on my car last Sat and he said that you can hear a slight rattle coming from the flywheel when turning the engine off, just as it cutting out. He said that this is the very early signs so nothing to worry about for a while yet, but worth keeping an eye on.

Fair enough, nothing to worry about for some while in that case!

I have a 1.9TDI and have had to replace the dual mass fly wheel recently.
Symptoms were a rattling/knocking noise when the car was idle.
The replacement cost was in the region of £1200.

Ouch, from where? I bought an LUK dual mass from Darkside for ~£300 and got charged £200 Labour from the local VAG specialist.

My repair was carried out by a mobile mechanic I use for servicing. I'll check my invoice tonight but the flywheel alone was around £400.

I got a number of quotes from a number of different companies. A lot of them had quotes over a £1000, cheapest I got for just labour was £80 from a mate but not sure I trusted him lol. You just have to look around I guess.

Midland VW gave an estimate of around £600 - not sure of what brand flywheel they were sourcing.

Checked my invoices for the works......

£420 for labour.

£795.92 for parts including:
Dual mass flywheel
Clutch cover
Clutch plate
Clutch bearing
