Hi, I've a 2011 a4 3.0tdi quattro fitted with the S tronic gearbox and covered 100k.

I've been having some issues lately, which most of the time I can drive around the problem. The problem is intermittent and only when first started and cold. When starting and putting the car into drive, I get a shunt forward and after a few miles the problem is non existent.

If I start the car from cold like above but put it in reverse, reverse off my drive, the gearbox is perfectly happy to go into drive without the shunt. I've just add the gearbox oil and filter changed at audi but it's made no difference.

I like the car, I want to remap her but I'd like to get the gearbox sorted first. I believe from reading this forum that taking it to audi would be pointless, as they replace rather than repair.

Well oil & filter change is always the first thing to do. Did Audi update the TCU firmware? There definitely were update(s) and from what I have read these did make a difference. The other possibility is that the mechatronics are playing up.

Mines been doing that for the last 75k (and probably before that I bought it with about 7k on the clock), oil change makes the gear changes smoother but doesn't seem to effect the occasional first gear clunk when cold.

You are wise to try and resolve the gearbox issues before thinking about a map as a remap is only likely to make any pre existing issues worse.
Getting it connected to VCDS to read the fault codes would be a good idea. This may give you an idea what the issue is.
The problem with these boxes is that they are so complex that there is little you can do except,
1 ) perform adaption tests on VCDS which may improve operation as well as checking for software updates.
2 ) replace oil and filter if not done recently using correct parts.
3 ) replace mechatronic unit.

Thanks for the reply guys. Ive got the car booked into audi in three weeks time.

Have you investigated the problem?

Nah, I never bothered, figured it was usual, and as it's silky smooth otherwise and hasn't changed in 75k I figure it's nothing serious even if it's not. I've got plenty of other problems, a month of turbo issues is the tip of the iceburg. Pretty annoyingly had another turbo related limp mode the day before our holiday so I've had to use the SOs 1.2 TDi Polo to transport the family 250 miles to Devon for two weeks while the garage send the turbo away (again) for the actuator to be calibrated.

I picked my car up for audi yesterday, they've reset the adaptations and carried out a 40 mile drive. I jumped in it this morning and........... the shunt is still there.
I like the car but don't want to spend over 9k on a gearbox.

Are the gearboxes compatible between my 2011 and say, a 2012 - 2015?

There's a gearbox specialist in Wales somewhere (big place I know) that works with boxes like these and they're meant to be very good and very reasonable.
You might find info on the b6 section.

Cheers, I'll look into that.

I've found a very low mileage gearbox from a 2013 A5 that would be ideal if it'll fit? I recall reading that revisions were made to the gearbox in 2012.

I believe @razza1 had his S tronic repaired at 3D Transmissions in Reading. Not sure if that's of any use to you?
