Hi all

First post here. I bought a neat little Ming Blue A3 1.8 t back in November, found the forum useful for lots of stuff but I can't find someone with a similar problem so thought I'd ask away..

Went on a trip to Worcestershire at the weekend, driving no harder than usual. On the way up, perfect. About 30 miles back though and the shifter got stiffer and stiffer when changing gear. When I pulled over to check it out, putting the car in reverse was impossible without slamming the stick into gear (pedal fully depressed, half depressed, tried both).

Shifting up and down is stiff but silent, once in the gear there's no problems..

Shifting into reverse makes a god awful clunk noise followed by a crunching sound. Once in, again, no problem reversing.

Any ideas?

Nope, its biting at exactly the same height as when I bought it @ 106k (its now at 112).

Took it to the local vag specialist, reckons it's a worn clutch. Replacement clutch + flywheel jobby apparently. Any other (cheaper) ideas? :-D

SORN it ... lol

But seriously... it will either be the clutch or a gearbox issue... by gearbox issue I mean dodgy selector fork and/or syncro issues... niether will be cheap... and if you have to change the gearbox its advisable to do the clutch too...

tbh it sounds like the clutch hence asking about bite point

<tuffty/>

Do you have a 5 or 6 speed box if 6 I am breaking my Audi Quattro which will fit and will sell you clutch fly and box for £300 it has 88k on it but has been working perfect since 60k when I got he car.

5 speed I'm afraid mate.

I don't think its a total gear box problem, the mechanic seemed to think it was a straight clutch replacement. I'll get it up on the ramp and look the whole car over first though. No point spending £550 if something else is about to die.

True very true. My m8 just paid £750 for clutch and fly for his golf r32.
