My mate has just had his 14 plate A4 tdi s line stolen with out the keys which I didn't think possible. We have just found out that all Audi stop/starts or key in the dash start can now have the ecu over ridden to start the car via the obd port, takes less than 3mins. Just wanted to warn people of this an to keep a more closer eye on our cars.

Very sorry to hear that.

So you mean Audi cars with the stop-start engine technology and also Audi cars that take the key in the dash, can be stolen via this method? Where did you find this information?

Yes mate that's correct, we was bamboozled to how it could have been took until some searching for answers and info from the police who say the thieves are targeting audi's with this. I can't say it's only audi's but I would have thought all cars that have this function basically run the same tech?!

It took them less than 5 mins to take the car, he went to pick his missus up at 8:30 and cctv shows him walking out of building at 8:35 an his car is gone. Gutted for the bloke cos his A3 tdi black edition was also taken from a sneak burglary on his house last year.

Wow thats some bad news for those with that tech on their cars! Hard to beat the bog standard key in the ignition! We will just wait now for those who come along and tell you that you are mistaken and that cars with this tech are no easier to steal. It will be the keyless entry denial all over again.

Unbelievable. They obviously know what they are doing. Gutted for him.

Exactly what I said, you can't beat the good old key.

Ive been meaning to look into one of those OBD port spoofing things, where it puts on another face and changes the layout of the wires. Maybe now is the time.

Can't beat a simple cut off switch on the fuel pump wiring or something hidden somewhere in the car that only you know about.

There's a lot of OBD locks out there now, I never thought of them until this happened.

Yeah true about the cut off switch and the obd locks. This is installed on a range rover but you could prob get the same thing for Audi:

This was in the news recently. Cant beat the good old key

I've read a recent hacker news article and it is now possible to spoof your remote too, so opening your car with a key is very easy. While they can't drive the car away without butchering the ECU, they can easily open the car and steal any valuables in it. I was very surprised that even cars as old as a couple of years did not have a rolling key code on the remotes!

Car manufacturers are very slow to address this as always and I doubt that any retrofits are going to be offered to help owners of older cars :(

My uncle has a car audio, security, lighting etc business and what he does for all his Focus RS customers is he relocated the OBD port from the factory location.

Perhaps we could do the same and hide the port itself?

There are specialists offering OBD protection, they basically change the port adapter location and the adapter itself so it cannot be used with standard OBD devices.
