Hey guys,

So my Avant 2.0TDi SE needs new shocks as the old ones are leaking a bit, and it also needs new bushes in the front suspension. The car had 160k on the clock so I was thinking of putting new springs on as well, so the whole suspension is refreshed.

It's a family car, so some improvement in handling would be nice but I'm not trying to turn it into a track day toy!

So I was thinking of Eibach Pro springs (dropping it by 30mm)

And Bilstein B4 shocks
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=251610001729

Does that seem like a good choice? Is anyone using the same and can comment on the drive?

Alternatively, and a bit cheaper, is this kit from AP... Is it any good?

Any help is appreciated!

Ta!

Cheers, will do.

Also I've noticed that the rear of the car seems to sit lower than the front... Not sure if this is normal, and is it likely to be level once I swap to a new set of springs?

I have an sline, mines the same and I wondered the same thing as yourself. Had two garages inspect suspension and they both seemed to think it was fine

Interestng options. I am looking myself at the minute as I have two snapped coils on the rear of my s-line. I was thinking about Eibach springs. Would love Coil overs but don't know if I can quite stretch that far.

Does anyone know the lower heights quoted, are these technically from a non s-line version? I.e. 20-30 mm would be roughly the same as standard s-line spec?

Cheers

I've just put the Bilstein B4 (make sure you get the sport shocks if you go for these) and Eibach Pro combo on my saloon and it drives well. Its a lot sharper when turning and less body roll (I had SE suspension before). It is a little bouncy on the motorway though but not uncomfortable.

This is normal, the back of my saloon sits lower than the front even with the new shocks and springs.

The Eibach Pro springs will give you the ride height almost identical to the S Line spec springs. They are also a little comfier than the OE's but are designed not to give more body roll when cornering.
As Nufab has 160k. miles on his car I would have thought a complete change of suspension is due.

Not sure if this will be of any use to you or not but...

I'm looking into this at the moment for my Avant, just called up Eibach and Bilstein to ask about comfort difference between pro and sportline springs, both say there is a small difference in ride comfort but you would be hard pressed to notice. Bilstien B6 & B8 shocks are exactly the same damping just that the b8 has shortened damper rods designed for lowering springs.

Think I'll be opting for Bilstein B12 Sportline (b8 shocks and Sportline springs) kit to help level up the car front to back.

On the other hand my head keeps getting turned by the AP lowering kits as they're half the price, are the Bilstein really worth double, is the performance difference really that great?

The best Eibach springs are the Pro's, the Sportlines are for the 'Get Slammed' fraternity. This is based on my track experience in Clio Cups with both type of springs fitted.

I'm certainly not a member of that fraternity, I only want to try and level out front to back wheel arch gaps

Just putting on a nice new set of springs all round will level it out. There's a few good makes available but which one will suit you? You can't try before you buy. You could play safe and fit the OE ones, the ball is in your court :footy:

Standard or updated top mounts?

Damian, do you price match other companies? Can get b12 pro kit delivered to my door for £640.

Nufab, I've done it again, sorry for hyjacking your thread!

If anyone is after some front b4 sport shocks, I have a pair brand new in the classifieds. Taking offers on these as I had to fit genuine in the end!

Not at all, especially on an S line.
The drop on the pro's will be barely noticeable, Sportlines give a nice subtle but worthwhile drop. Plenty of pictures around of the two fitted to check for yourself.

Eibach with Bilstein B4 is an excellent road compliant up .

I get a little confused about the further uprated B6 and B8 dampers.

Being the shorter B8's are for lowered springs , well you wouldn't put B6 with ordinary springs would you ?

Lol , get the excellent B12 Pro Kit .

Only a suggestion as B4's with Eibach Pro would be cheaper and more comfortable.

Seems to be the general consensus that with cars like mine running original suspension at around 100k are a more comfortable ride when eibach / b8 combo are fitted because original suspension is so worn. I hope this is correct!

If b4's were hundreds cheaper then I may be tempted but if it's only a small saving I quite like the idea of uprated handling of the b8's. Whether it's worth the extra money...

Anyone had either eibach pro or sportline fitted for a year or so yet? Interested in how they settle in.....

Currently on original s line suspension my car sits with 15mm gap between top of tyres and wheel arch at the rear and 35mm at the front. I presume the rears are so low due to age/milage of my car.

Ideally I'd like it to be about 15-20mm front and back and was hoping after a settling in period with one of the eibach spring types this would be the end result?

If not eibach any other spring options you can suggest to get this result?

Google images is your friend!!

I had 35mm H&Rs on my old car and was around 20mm arch gap, spaced the Speedlines to make it look lower than it actually was.

And just before I sold it, no spacers on stock wheels.

Both the pics were taken over a year after fitting.

Thanks, yes I had already seen your pics on another thread. So the 30mm eibach pros won't be a million miles off what I need then. Thing that bothers me is I thought Avant arch gaps are always larger at the front than rear and the only way to sort it was to lower fronts 10 or 15mm more than rears. Or am I misinformed?

Is that not because the pro's lower 30mm all round and the avant came from the factory with an **** down stance?

I think the Sportlines come with a larger drop for the front to get the gap equal?

Pro's and B5 cups could work for you but you'd need to use OEM shocks.

Or just go for COILOVERS!!!!

Yes this is why I was considering the sport lines but wasn't 100% sure of factory stance. Only thing is I'm a little different in my requirement to 99% of people on here where as I don't want the tyres tucked under the arches. I am a
Iittle worried sportlines may do this after a year or so. Seen some pics of a member who's fitted some to an Avant and looks like when 1st fitted they're real close to it

Having just fitted AP coilovers to my Avant, I can't recommend them highly enough. The ride is better (less crashy) than the standard s line setup on before and you can set your ride height exactly as you want it. Plus point is you can adjust the rears on the car easily enough as well, which you can't on a lot of coilover set ups. Wouldn't do anything different if I was doing it again.

On a side note... I've got a full set of B7 s line shocks for sale (and 3 springs - 1 rear was cracked).......
