Sofware for camcorder and converter

Hi can anyone on here recommed any good software for transfering video from camcorders to laptops. I have a JVC digtal video camera (model GR-D23EK) If that helps. Don't use the camcorder that often but want to back up all my videos as this camcorder uses tapes.

Also any free convertor's you's could recommed, for easy playback.

Does the camcorder have a DV output and the laptop would need a DV/Firewire input.
If the camcorder only has a USB output this will not stream out video, only still images.

Hey STampie, thanks for the reply. Sorry should have said i've the DV/Firewire cable and have already streamed out video to my old P.C but I cann't remember what the software was and it wasn't the greatest anyway. Would you recommed any free software to use??

I actually use Sony Vegas which is amazing but for from free!
Doesn't Windows have movie maker software built it?
